It’s July and Independence Day weekend. Ordinarily, this would be cause for great celebration and fun, but in pandemic times? It’s just another day.
Join us for this month’s Ultimate Coffee Date. After reading here, head on over to visit Coco and Deborah, our awesome link-up hosts.
Over coffee, I would tell you that…
I’m angry. Florida is now THE hotspot in the country, and cases are just increasing exponentially. It reminds of something and I’m not sure I can put my finger on it…
Just kidding. I know exactly what it reminds me of. And we all know how well it worked out for the peaceful island of Amity.
Over coffee, I would tell you that…
We have made our decision about little man’s 2020-21 school year. Our district offered four choices (homeschool, non-school-based virtual school, school-based distance learning and brick and mortar school with three levels of restrictions based on community spread), and we opted for school-based distance learning. Little man wants to remain affiliated with his current school, but he’s not comfortable with the restrictions and uncertainty of the brick and mortar option. We need to make a 9-week commitment to distance, and while it’s not ideal, we plan to have him collaborate with neighborhood friends making the same decision and supplementing electives on our own. I’m glad the decision is made, but I hope it’s the right one.
Over coffee, I would tell you that…
Hamilton is streaming on Disney+ today and I am so happy. It’s my favorite show and I was so lucky to see it in NYC for my 40th birthday. We had tickets to see it again in Jacksonville on St. Patrick’s Day, but the show was cancelled due to the pandemic. I have planned a super fun, Hamilton-themed dinner (check my Instagram for details later) for tonight, and we are all going to watch it and sing along. Will you be joining in?
Over coffee, I would tell you that…
Luna is THE BEST. She is growing so fast and she’s so busy. I’m really worried about her and the Independence Day fireworks. She hates thunder, and I know the sky booms are going to terrify her. Clearly, my evening will be spent reassuring her, but I don’t mind at all. Also, she wanted to join in the coffee chat with her “Unimpressed Cafe Au Lait.” How could I say no?
Over coffee, I would tell you that…
The St. Augustine Moms writers had a small virtual watercolor party last night. It was absolutely magical. I haven’t painted or created anything in so long, and while I’m not thrilled with my end result, I love that there are tutorials and how-to’s for just about everything, and I can’t wait for our next session.
Over coffee, I would tell you that…
I had a real life coffee date with a friend I haven’t seen in a while and we were both relieved to find that we share so many of the same opinions and values. We both feel we’ve been so guarded, so it was darn right cathartic to share in a judgement free sharing of ideas and thoughts. We are both looking forward to more coffee mornings.
What would you tell me over coffee?

We still don’t know what the options will be for school here in the fall. I am hoping to can continue working from home most days, because most of my job doesn’t require me being in the office. I bet it feels good to at least have the decision made. There’s no way to know what the right choice is.

We “go back” the first week of August, so that’s why we have decisions made already. However, they won’t announce the level of community spread until August 1, which has people hollering, because it’s not enough time to make plans if we are at a medium or high and have to open at some hybrid model. Ugh.
Laurie says
Awww…your Luna is adorable! Such a cutie. So sorry to read about the increase in cases in Florida. I think your son is wide to pick distance learning for the first 9 weeks of the year. Who knows what will happen as we get closer to fall? Maybe distance learning will be the only option.
I had to smile when I read about your real-life coffee with a friend. We do have to be so guarded lately, just in case the person we are talking to doesn’t share our values. Good for you for having the courage to open up to each other.
runswithpugs says
Our area itself is doing ok, but you can just feel the increase creeping closer. It’s so anxiety inducing and I hate it.
I’m pretty good at picking out people with whom I can speak openly. My friends cover the whole political spectrum, and for the most part, we can have mature and productive conversations, but sometimes, it’s nice to just unload to someone who gets it.
Deborah Brooks says
The school options for everyone are really frustrating and confusing. I feel for you all with younger kids. Who the heck knows what the right decision to make is? having neighborhood support will be a great bonus. My son goes back to college next month and who knows what it will be like there! Thanks for catching up over coffee. Have a fun weekend
runswithpugs says
Hope you have a great weekend, too.
At the age of 12, we wanted little man’s input, too. He has a right to have a say in this. Fortunately, we were all in agreement with what he wanted, but who knows what the quality of education will be on all fronts. So hard. 🙁

I loved Hamilton. Haven’t decided if I’m splurging on Disney Plus – I’m home alone. The hubby is at the lake. I had to work.
Yes I’m sad that the other states are not following the rules. Glad to be in NYS.
Also glad I am no longer a teacher or parent…tough times.
runswithpugs says
Seriously. These are hard decisions for everyone. We are SO lucky that we have the flexibility where it is even a choice. A lot of people have to work out of the home and have no choice but to send their kids back to brick and mortar.
Coco says
I think you made a good choice about school. Our biggest school district made people who choose distance learning to choose for the whole school year, I think because they have to figure out classroom configurations and schedules. They are only offering 2 days in-person anyway.
Glad you got out for a real coffee date! I had coffee with my daughter-in-law after running an errand with them, and it was so nice to sit and chat.
Scooby’s not scared by fireworks (unless we’re outside) but he does “woof” at them.
runswithpugs says
It’s crazy how people are acting over school choice. We just have to trust that we made a good decision and hope that it will all work out. Of course, little man is doing Advanced Math over the summer, and I am rethinking everything (why is math THE WORST), but what can you do lol.

The school choices are so hard – I’m sure it feels good to have made a decision. Nothing is figured out here yet and parents are really stressing 🙁
I cannot imagine how frustrating it must be to be in Florida right now. Our numbers are steadily declining so I’m cautiously optimistic.
I’m so looking forward to watch Hamilton. We were planning to see the show when it was scheduled to come to Boston in September, but…well…you know what happened to those plans.
runswithpugs says
Miami just started shutting it down again. That’s about six hours away from me, but still. It’s too close.
I hope you love the show!

It’s such a weird and uncertain time right now — I’m glad they’re offering your son different options and I hope everything works out!
Luna is adorable + a virtual watercolor party sounds like a lot of fun! I may have to look up some art tutorials for painting/watercolor so I can do something like that for fun! :]
runswithpugs says
There are a ton of tutorials! This is the one we used. https://www.instagram.com/paigepayne_creations/ She has a bunch of tutorials in her IGTV stuff.

I hear you on being guarded. I know my friends don’t understand why I don’t join the group, but it’s not the right thing for me. I’m not judging them. When I was at my mom’s, we stopped to chat a bit with the couple she used to eat with — and they said their daughter, who lives in TX, was feeling so left out with her friends getting together. I totally understood!
I hadn’t really thought about Hamilton & Disney+ until Coco mentioned it, but we have Tivo. Well, Mr. Judy got it set up for me so we can watch it today. 🙂
Lola has always been scared of thunder, but not as much fireworks. And now I guess her hearing is going, because she didn’t even wake up when we had a really loud crack of thunder near us last night.
Enjoy your day & the movie, Jenn!
runswithpugs says
It’s really hard and it’s so easy to get and feel left out. I’m struggling with people going around acting like nothing is wrong. Not judging. I just don’t understand it. Maybe even jealous on some levels, because every decision I make feels so heavy and full of consequences.
I hope you enjoyed Hamilton!
Denise @ runheartfit says
I had no idea that Hamilton was on Disney+ but it seems everyone else did.
I have a Luna too. It is a very popular name apparently. My Luna
is terrified of loud noises, I ended up giving her Benadryl.
runswithpugs says
I really wanted to name her Berndette or The Norotorious Ruth Bader Ginsberg, but I was outvoted. So she is Luna Lovegood. We also have a Hedgehog named Hufflepuff (and then Delilah and Bentley, who I didn’t name). Bernadette honestly would have been perfect
