Welcome back to the Fit Five Friday linkup! Even better, it’s time for the April Ultimate Coffee Date! This is a great time to share with each other over coffee, virtually, of course.
After reading here, head on over to visit Coco and Deborah, our awesome link-up hosts.
Over coffee, I would tell you…
That I got the first dose of the vaccine and I could not be happier! It was a very positive experience, from start to finish, and I am delighted to report that I didn’t have any major side effects. I was a little tired afterwards and my arm was sore for about 24 hours (which I’m sure was mostly because I sleep on that side), and I was just slightly nauseous for a few hours on day two. This is a small price I was more than willing to pay.
Over coffee, I would tell you…
That I am very much in love with my Easter nails! You all know I am pretty addicted to Color Street, but this Spring Fling pattern is so pastel and cute and perfect for the holiday. While I do miss my dip nails, it’s so nice to be able to spoil myself just a bit at home.
Over coffee, I would tell you…
That we finally got back out for a group hike! And the roses were just too pretty to be believed. Truth be told, I can’t stand the smell of roses, but the sight of them is always so stunning. Even though it was pretty chilly out, we got in a few miles in the fresh air, and even saw a small pod of dolphins! It does the soul so good!
Over coffee, I would tell you…
That we have decided to let A take the annual standardized tests at his brick and mortar school. This decision has been agony for me. I think the tests are a load of hooey on a good day, and straight up absurd in the middle of a pandemic. However, we also want his transition to in-person 8th grade to be smooth, and while we are more than willing to fight for whatever placements and classes he might need, it would be nice to not have to fight. Long story short, parenting decisions during the last two years have been the major cause of all my anxiety and sleepless nights.
Over coffee, I would tell you…
I won an award! Last night was our District Awards Banquet for our BSA District, and I was one of the people awarded with the Baden-Powell Unit Scouter Award. This is a new award, and designated to those who “contribute to the success of your unit and embody the Spirit of Scouting and the ideals that our founder, Lord Robert Baden-Powell, set forth the leadership, skills instruction and character development of our youth today and the leaders of tomorrow.” It was a huge surprise and so nice to receive. I’m also so proud of our Troops (our leadership team is proud to serve both a male and a female troop) for earning several awards last night. It’s so good to be part of a team so dedicated to these incredible Scouts.
What would you share over coffee?

Hooray for the first vaccine! I just scored appts. for the Caveman and I for the J&J one.
Congrats on the award. It’s always so nice to be appreciated.
runswithpugs says
Yay! That’s awesome! I hope it goes smoothly for you! Thank you.
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
Congrats on your award and yay for getting the vaccine! The testing this year is just crazy. I think that our state isn’t making them all mandatory because they take so much time and we JUST got back into buildings. I hope it goes well!
runswithpugs says
We have been back at school all year, and our governor is offering zero concessions on this. It’s straight up enraging. I’m just so over it.
Zenaida Arroyo says
Congrats on your award! You look so cute in that dress. I love it. That is great you had no major effects from the vaccine. I think pretty much everyone has said they experienced soreness in the arm. I know we’ve talked about this several times, but this past year has been awful for parents, students, and teachers. Well, everyone, but in this case just these 3 groups. NO, NO, NO, to tests. I am annoyed and disappointed that states are requiring students to take these students.
runswithpugs says
I am so pissed about it. I feel like it’s stressing the students and teachers, and may even be punishing both groups. We have all been through enough. Let it go. However, Florida doesn’t have an opt-out exception, so by not going, we would be openly protesting, and I just can’t do it anymore. Our governor is a jerk and our schools are going to suffer for this. I told A to do his best, but between you and me, I don’t care how he scores. It can’t possibly mean less, especially this year.
Thanks about the dress. It’s so comfy.

So happy to hear that you had a very positive vaccine experience. I’m schedule for my first shot next Sunday. I’m not nervous, but just so thankful that I will hopefully be fully vaccinated by early May.
Congrats on winning the Baden-Powell Unit Scouter Award!
runswithpugs says
Yay! Good luck! I was more apprehensive than nervous. It’s just such a big deal.
Erica @Erica Finds says
I got the J&J shot and it also a great experience and I had mild arm pain and was tired and a bit nauseated. My husband had a bad headache for 2 days (and flu-like symptoms day of). Definitely a small price to pay. I feel like I won the lottery getting the vaccine!
runswithpugs says
Very small price.
Here, they are giving the vaccine to just about anyone who shows up. People are moving here to get away from COVID rules, so we are fighting an uphill battle in that regard.
Michelle D. says
Congrats on your award! And, yay for getting the vaccine!
Sorry for the stress around the standardized tests! Like you, I’m not a fan of them normally, but given all that’s going on, it just seems crazy that school districts are relying on them…sigh.
runswithpugs says
So upsetting. And we don’t have opt-out law here, so it’s more of a protest, and I am all out of fight. We spoke to a few people who all recommended to just take them. I really don’t care how he does (he’s a terrible test taker), and his scores are not at reflection of him as a student (or person, for that matter). It’s just one more hill to climb.
Darlene S Cardillo says
Congrats on your award and its so nice to see you in “real” clothes lol
UI love flowers…we have snow on the ground …it will be a while.
I’m glad your vaccine reaction was minor. I had none for both. I think it was mind over matter IMO. I just didn’t think about it. I’m often tired lol

I am definitely often tired, but it was like I just needed to be horizontal immediately. I think a lot of it was probably nerves, excitement and adrenaline burning off. When that leaves the body, it can definitely be draining. The nausea was a surprise, but it was mild, and I ate some matzoh and moved on with my day.
Can’t wait for Dose 2!
Real clothes and my hair down! What?
Laurie says
Good for you for getting your first dose of the vaccine! Hubby and I did too, last Saturday. My arm was a little sore for 24 – 30 hours, but that was the only side effect. I can’t wait to be fully vaccinated. We are making plans to go out to eat in a restaurant already! As soon as our 2 weeks after the 2nd dose are up. Congrats on your scouting award. Well done!
runswithpugs says
Yay! Vaccine or no, I am still very much not into crowds or being inside. But as Floridians, we have so many outdoor options, so we will get by! Your dinner will be wonderful!
Coco says
Interesting that you don’t like the smell of roses! I like fresh roses but don’t like fake rose scents. Congrats on your reward and your vaccine. Ugh on the school testing stress. So it would be used for placement?
runswithpugs says
Floral scents in general are not my thing. Lavender makes me ill LOL. I like citrus, herbal scents (like rosemary and eucalyptus), or baked goods.
It could be used for placement. However, they have no data since 5th grade, and he’s grown so much since then. Honestly, I’ve turned this over to K. I’ve made so many of these decisions and I just can’t take the burden of one more. It’s exhausting and I always feel like I’m screwing something up.
Kimberly Hatting says
Congrats on the scouting award! I like the smell of roses, but certainly do not love it either. Their beauty, though, is worth the awkward scent.
runswithpugs says
I tolerated the smell to enjoy the gardens.
Wendy says
Congrats on getting the vaccine!! It’s such a great first step towards ending this thing!!!
runswithpugs says
We are so happy to be part of the solution.
Jenny says
Congratulations on your award!!! It sounds like you put a lot of time and effort into the Scouts, and it’s nice to be recognized for that.
Yes…. so many parenting decisions this year have been agonizing. My daughter has been doing school in person, but about 50% of the kids are doing it virtually, and it seems like no one is really learning much. I console myself that everyone is in the same boat. I think it’s going to be a tough transition back to “normal.” Hang in there.
runswithpugs says
I love volunteering and am so grateful to have the opportunity with such an amazing group of Scouts.
I just don’t see why we don’t write off this year. I mean, give us all a freaking break. Ugh.
Renée @runlaugheatpie says
hooray for getting the first dose of the vaccine!! We are in such a mess here with vaccines – now they put AstraZeneca on hold again because a 25 year old died from a blood clot. We keep getting the promise that the Janssen (J&J) vaccine will be available soon… I hope I get that one (the AZ blood clotting seems to be a problem with women under on hormones, which would be me…). TBH I am almost at the point that I’ll take what I can get and the chances that go along with it.
Congrats on your award!! Well done and so lovely to be appreciated like that!
runswithpugs says
We have Pfizer, Moderna and J&J. My mom had Pfizer with very limited side effects, so I figured that was my best bet. However, the only one I didn’t want was AZ. I don’t think it’s even available here, so not an issue. I hope you are able to get something soon. <3

Congrats on your award & your first vaccine!
I can only imagine how tough the decisions parents have to make these days are.
Beautiful roses! I love the smell of roses!
