And finally, A turned 13! We had some quiet celebrations with family and friends, and then just plowed through the rest of the week. How do potatoes fit in? You’ll see!
Sunday – rest
Remember that Saturday night campout? Well, it ended quite dramatically with a terrible lightning storm at 3AM. Not to worry, We are a Scouting family, and most of the guests are outdoorsy kids. They all acted immediately, and got everyone to safety. Never a dull moment.
Later that morning, we went to Top Golf with some friends. We had a great time on the third floor of the venue, with apps and drinks and lots of golf. I didn’t play very well, but it was so nice and good to be out and doing something normal-ish.
Monday – 5 miles, bridge repeats + SSOD Tank Top Toner I
Out to the bridge I went for another Monday. On the drive over, I made up 80,000 reasons why I didn’t have to run and could just walk. And then I told myself to knock it off and handle it. So I did, and had one of the best runs in a long time. Yay!
When I got home, I did a 12 minute arm workout with Studio Sweat OnDemand. Cat Kom serves up this quick workout with heavy weights and dynamic moves designs to focus on all parts of the arm. It’s super manageable, and provides a lot of impact for the time. I’m a fan.
A worked on some exams. the school year is coming to an end.
Tuesday – 5 miles, running + .56 miles, walking
I was so glad for this run. Sometimes, it’s just so good to be out there. This was one of of those times.
The rest of the day was crazy with errands and more exams. A had his cooking club (not the best recipe), and then Scouts. I was on deadline for a project so it all felt like a scramble.
Wednesday – 4 miles, walking + SSOD Tank Top Toner I + Animal Abs
Another day, another walk, another workout. Done, done, and done.
I’m making it a habit to bring Luna with me for about a mile. She needs the exercise, and it kills two birds with one stone.
Thursday – 5 miles, running + .65 miles, walking
Happy 13th birthday to our sweet boy! I really just can’t believe it. I got in my run before he woke up.
The day was up to him. He requested breakfast tacos (pancakes stuffed with scrambled eggs and bacon), and wanted to go shopping. We hit up Nike and Van’s for shoes. He got several new pairs and then it was off to lunch. The afternoon was dedicated to video games and then we took him out to dinner with his friend. It was a chill, but wonderful day.
Friday – 4.38 miles, walking + SSOD Tank Top Toner I
I was tired from the late night, but put in my miles all the same. There’s always 12 minutes for a solid arm workout, so I handled that, as well.
We planned to meet my parents at a local seafood restaurant with outdoor seating, and then they joined us at the house for ice cream cake. In all the celebrating, the poor kid didn’t have an actual cake! Situation rectified.
And then we turned in early.
Saturday – Spud Run 10K 6.2 miles
J and I left at 6AM for the 30 minute drive to Hastings and the Spud Run. I have never done this event before, and it was incredible. I will share a race report, soon, but I need to share that runners got the usual t-shirts and medals, but also two heads of cabbage and a bag of potatoes from the local farms. Don’t see that every day.
In the meantime, the boys headed back to Whitney Labs to place the oyster blocks. I am so bummed I missed it, but the original workday got postponed and I was already registered for my race. It’s hard when you can’t be everywhere, but A was there to support his Troopmate, and earned his volunteer hours, so that’s what mattered most.
Then the boys went to the pool for a bit and I ended up taking a nap, because why not. We ordered Chinese takeout for dinner and sat around doing absolutely nothing the rest of the day.
Goal-getting
Alright, we are back in action! Whoo hoo!
Speed work? Yes! Strength training? YES! Did I finally finish “Oona Out of Order?” YES YES YES! We are moving and shaking now.
This week is going to be fun. We have May the Fourth Be With You on Tuesday and Cinco de Mayo on Wednesday. Also, Wednesday is Giving Day, and I’m going to be sharing some of my favorite causes on the Runners’ Roundup! A has his annual appointment, and oh yeah, it’s one week til my birthday. Let the good times roll!
I am linking up with the Weekly Rundown, with Confessions of A Mother Runner and Running on the Fly! Check them out!
How was your week in training?
Anything exciting coming up for you this week?
Jessie says
Cabbage and potatoes as swag, that is unique! How fun.
great week of training! Sometimes the runs we dread the most end up being the best!

I also like running across bridges it’s fun. Happy birthday to your son. My baby will turn 21 soon. It seems like he was just 13. Time flies! Have a good week!

I love your story of telling yourself to ‘knock it off’ about walking vs running on the bridge. This sounds so similar to a convo I have with myself at least once a week when I wake up for my morning workout.
It looks like your son had an awesome birthday celebration – happy birthday to him!

I have to say that I’ve gotten some weird race swag but I’ve never gotten cabbage or potatoes, lol! It’s kind of fun…
That picture of Luna keeps cracking me up! What a character! I have a funny one of Cocoa that I will share.
Jenny says
Wow, your weeks are really packed! Once again Happy Birthday to A! Sounds like he had a perfect day. I hope you have some fun things planned for your own birthday!
Coco says
Way to go talking yourself into that bridge workout! It’s great you have such a good coach. 😉
Happy Birthday to A — glad he got his cake eventually.
Potatoes and cabbage make for very unique race swag — how fun!
Kimberly Hatting says
Ha! Gotta love the cabbage and potatoes LOL I’d love to take on some bridges for speedwork, but I have plenty of hills; I guess those will have to do.
Cari says
Oh that cake looks amazing! Yay for the best run in a while
Knew what you meant re: birthday and potatoes, but Monday brain read that as birthday potatoes. Which… not bad 😀
Melissa says
Omg, 13!! Wow, how does that feel? Happy birthday! (although I was admittedly looking for a photo of a mashed potato cake hehe)
I love that you can take Luna out with you for a mile. Her face is the cutest!

A big happy 13 to A!
The potatoes and cabbage are definitely some of the more unusual race swag I’ve ever heard of!
Zenaida Arroyo says
Happy Birthday to your son! That is interesting about the breakfast tacos. I thought those would be tortilla tacos but with bacon, eggs, etc. I do like that they’re with pancakes! Well, more interesting is the potatoes and cabbage. Now that I’ve never seen as race swag!
Chocolaterunsjudy says
That is a packed full week!
I’m drooling over that cake. Yum.
