In the last few months, I have made a habit of beach running to mix things up and soothe my soul. With the world in its current state, it’s been a much needed reprieve. Running at the beach offers emotional and physical benefits, so let’s dive in.
Beach Running Is Beautiful
There are few things more beautiful than an ocean beach. I prefer to go at sunrise and am always amazed at the gorgeous views that come with it. You just don’t get prettier sights.
The Salt Air Is Restorative
Salt has some serious healing properties, so logging your miles in the salt air is extremely beneficial to one’s overall health. The sea air is said to help you absorb oxygen more quickly, and keep your serotonin levels properly balanced. People pay for halo-therapy (which involves breathing salt air) and salt caves/spas, but I prefer to go straight to the source.
Beach Running Promotes Foot + Ankle Strength
The shifting sand and uneven landscape make running the beach a fantastic way to build strength in your feet and ankles. Since the ground is unstable, runners have to work harder to stay upright. Whether in your favorite running shoes or barefoot, taking it to the ocean adds some extra challenge to your miles.
Beach Running Gives You A Chance To Explore
When you’re running on the beach, exploration is a fun “side effect.” You can take in the turtle nests, or run close to the water and look for shells, sea glass, and shark teeth. Hop up on the jetty and carefully make your way out to the water’s edge. Keep an eye out for boats, dolphins, and sharks. The options for adventure and exploration are endless.
Beach Running Gives You The Best Pictures
We all love showcasing our runs on the gram, and there’s something special about sharing photos like this. The beach offers an infinite number of backdrops for our favorite runs, and I love playing with angles and poses to get just the right shot.

I have but only when I go to Florida.
Some of our bike paths are scenic but mostly flat. Perfect for long runs.

We have some great bike paths here, but they are a little farther than I like to drive for a run.

I never run on the beach, although I could. I guess I’m afraid of the uneven ground, but you’re right- it’s good for foot and ankle strength. All your other points are good too- being near the ocean has numerous health benefits. Thanks for the reminder!

I don’t love the uneven ground, and some days I’m super sore afterwards. The sand only makes up a mile or so of my Monday runs, but it’s enough to make my ankle work. I bet you would love it!

Believe it or not, we have a beach here in Chicago – several, actually. I don’t run on it often but when I do, it’s for fun, exploration and photo opps. I should do it more! Thanks for the reminder!

That is true, you do! I bet it would be great to mix things up!

I love the beach and am always envious when I see your beach photos. If I lived closer to one I would definitely incorporate some beach runs into my routine. Being by the sea is good for the soul!

Sometimes, we talk about moving, but it would be hard to leave the proximity to super accessible beaches!

Sadly, no beach running in my locale, but I do try to take advantage when we’re on vacation. I do love all the extra work involved, though, because the sand offers great resistance (and balance LOL) training.

The sand is so great. Now, don’t get me wrong. I don’t like registering for beach races because they are so challenging, especially if the tide isn’t cooperating, but it’s a nice way to mix things up.

I absolutely love beach running, but unfortunately I don’t live near the ocean so can rarely indulge in it.

🙁 I’ve always lived within an hour or so of the East coast, or at least a lake of some other body of water. I’m fortunate to have the option.
