When all the registration and planning is done, race day confidence is the thing that pushes any event to its highest limit. If you’re anything like me, anxiety has a way of creeping in, and that doubt can sabotage the whole thing. There are some strategies to help over come that, so let’s explore!
Have Reasonable Expectations
We all love, and should rise to, a challenge, but biting off more than we can chew is a great way to crush confidence. For example, don’t register for a marathon in one month, when you’ve just started Couch To 5K, and are easing into the running journey. Is it possible to complete 26.2 miles like that? Sure. Will it be miserable? Probably, and might even lead to some serious injury.
Put In The Work
Training can always be a bit of a slog, but when you prepare properly for your event, race day confidence can soar. Dedicate yourself to your miles, your stretching, and your strength training. Take then time to rest and recover. Do the work, and you will be rewarded.
Be Prepared
Knowledge is power, so arm yourself well! Follow your race emails and be sure to check out things like the start time, course map, location (and content) of aid stations. Know how and where to pick up your packet, and be aware of the parking situation. Lay out your outfit the night before, so you have everything ready to go. This will make your race morning run more smoothly and leave you to focus on keeping a clear head for the event ahead.
Be Your Own Hype Person
You are worthy and you are ready, so fill your head with positivity and encouragement. Even in the thick of the race, be sure to keep reminding yourself that you have earned the right to be the course, and you are ready to crush it, no matter what. Good thoughts are powerful, and it’s one more step to claiming that race day confidence.
Have Fun!
Above all else, have fun. Sometimes it’s hard to remember, but running can be such a gift. Even when I’m struggling or not performing up to par, I try to remember how lucky I am to be out there. Keeping the fun side of things in mind is always the boost I need!

I agree, good thoughts are powerful! I also like to remind myself of all the time and hard work I put in – all those long runs, those intervals and glute bridges. The race is a reward for all that training.
Great reminders, Jenn!

I was so anxious before my last race, even though I was pretty confident. I think it was mainly because I hadn’t raced in so long and was driving so far by myself. A little bit of nerves is good, but too much can definitely impact performance!

Great tips and all these things are helpful! What really helps me is reviewing the race course and reading recaps from other runners. I’ve also had better luck if I’ve run the race before or at least run on the course.
Darlene S. Cardillo says
All great tips. I always get anxious before my races. I helps not to be alone.
Be prepared but the right clothes and be familiar with the logistics.
Most importantly is as you said enjoy it. Even if it’s hard and you are struggling, be grateful that you are there.
Deborah Brooks says
Reviewing race day logistics and the course helps me feel more relaxed. Also, remembering to have fun with the process as you say. That is why we do this 🙂

These are great, and I like your last tip the best. What in the world are we doing it for if it’s not fun? We’re not professional athletes (imagine the stress they must feel.) Of course, races are more fun if we do well- but in the end it should be something that brings us pleasure.
Kimberly Hatting says
I think having fun is key. Most of us aren’t getting paid to do this, so why stress if things go awry? I always (and I do mean ALWAYS) remind myself that I have survived every race I’ve ever run, no matter the distance, and I’m SO lucky to be able to run, period. Many others aren’t as fortunate. Gotta keep that glass half full 😉
Erica @ Erica Finds says
I think having realistic expectations is the biggest key to success. Especially after a freaking PANDEMIC! It’s helped me get back into the racing groove for sure!
Debbie says
I think putting in the work, trusting your training, and having a plan for race day are all key to being confident about your race. And having fun! I mean, we’re not getting paid for this so if it’s not fun, why do it?
Laura says
Yes! If I go into a race thinking about fun, my confidence is much better. No reason to stress about finish times when my salary does not rely on them.
