It’s hard to believe there might be benefits of summer running, but there are definitely some perks. At least, that’s what I tell myself as a Florida resident, who spends a lot of time in the summer season.
Summer Running Means More Races
In Florida, summer is time for lots of fabulous races. We move to shorter distances to accommodate for the heat, but there’s at least one race every weekend. They are fairly brutal with options on the road or sand, in the afternoon, or back to back with other events. Summer is a good time for the race community.
Summer Running Helps Us Slow Down
Easy runs are a big part of the spot, but it can be hard to adjust. The heat and humidity of summer makes it easier to slow our pace and focus on the “easy.” Granted, nothing eve feels easy in the summer, but it’s good practice all the same.
Summer Running Helps Us Focus On Hydration
Even for those of us who don’t love water, summer running helps us lean into hydration. There’s just no getting around the replenishing properties of water. The hotter temperatures are a reminder to do the right thing and drink up.
Summer Running Helps Us Mix Up Our Workouts
When running the summer gets too hard, we learn to adjust and find other ways to exercise. It’s a great time to develop strong cross-training habits. Maybe we supplement our miles with laps in the pool or adventures on the bike, but it presents an opportunity to shuffle things around and find new ways to get that heart rate pumping.
Summer Running Makes Us Grateful for Winter Running
Maybe it’s me, but once I’ve endured the heat and humidity of summer running, I’m super ready for winter running again. I do love being outside, but 95% humidity and strong sun can make things extra challenging. I embrace the struggle bus, because it makes us stronger, but I’ll be excited for cooler weather again!

I am not a fan of summer running. the humidity really zaps me out there. True, it does force us to slow down not sure if that is good or bad. I’m always grateful for fall and winter running

Yes, here in Florida we have a LONG hot summer. We either have to move up north, give up running, or embrace the heat and learn how to run in it. I’ll choose the latter! But I’m not doing any races in the afternoon or that take place on the sand- I have to draw the line somewhere.

Heat and humidity are my kryptonite so I try to get up early, run shorter races and look for cooling tips!

Yes, all of the above…except I do not nor ever anticipate embracing winter running, LOL.

I dislike the humidity but I know many times you cannot avoid it. I do love wearing few layers for running – just shorts and tank top!
