Sure, Florida is always hot, but we have moved into the “surface of the sun” portion of our summer. I’m talking temps in the 90s with 100% humidity. It’s almost too hot to move some days. Ugh.
Sunday
- Cardio: 7.74 miles, running + walking
Back in town and back to work. That’s how it goes. Since walked on Saturday, I needed to make up for it with a long run on Sunday. It wasn’t fabulous, but it got done.
Obviously, the rest of the day was just laundry and getting ready for the week. Blah.
Monday
- Cardio: 5.32 miles, running + walking (beach)
This was a truly beautiful morning. the weather was just right and there were so many dolphins at play. I loved it.
We started packing for our trip. Was I starting to get nervous? YES! Mr PugRunner picked up anxiety and anti-nausea meds for the pugs, and I kept my fingers crossed that they would be in good moods.
After I dropped A at karate, I did some returns and exchanges. My body has been super weird lately, so things aren’t fitting as expected. It’s annoying and sometimes a little depressing. I guess that’s what happens with time and age and gravity.
Tuesday
- Cardio: 8.01 miles, running + walking
It’s been so hard trying to get up in the morning and get out in the heat. I have to set my alarm clock for 4:45 in the summer to make it happen. it’s not my favorite.
Wednesday
- Cardio: 4.86 miles, walking
Oh Wednesday. Let’s do this.
I had the opportunity to take A out for lunch at Kiko Sushi Ramen, courtesy of Yelp Elite. He’s a ramen lover and we don’t have anywhere really close. It was a delicious meal, and we even shared our first milk bubble tea. Yum.
Our culinary adventures weren’t over! Mr PugRunner joined me for a Tijuana Flats influencer dinner, to try the new carnitas. I appreciate our date nights so much, and this was a great one.
Thursday
- Cardio: 7.72 miles, running + walking
Confession time: sometimes, it’s dangerous to push too hard. Thursday was one of those times. J and I really made a valiant effort, but at a certain point, her breathing was difficult and I found myself getting lightheaded. We gave ourselves permission to walk after a bit.
Friday
- Cardio: 4.41 miles, walking
Friends, I’m trying to keep smiling, but inside, I was just melting. It was my fault for going out a little later than planned, but we need a break.
The boys went out for haircuts and lunch, and I took myself out to the local Selfie Museum. I needed some new headshots and other photos, so figured that might be a great place to go. We have gorgeous outdoors scenery, but heat isn’t conducive to hair or makeup, so…
Saturday
- Cardio: 8.47 miles. running + walking
Finally! A solid run. I broke a wall and hit six miles of running which was a huge victory for me. This run happened on little sleep, but it was overcast despite the heat, and ended up being so much better than planned.
When I got home, I had to hustle to get to the dojo. A was testing for his second Dan! When he earned his black belt, he told me he wasn’t sure he was going to go further, and look at him now! The test lasted four hours, and eight students worked their tails off to earn either second or third Dan. We are so incredibly proud of him.
But our day wasn’t done! After all that, we joined our friends for a Havana Nights dance event. I used to love salsa dancing, and this event offered lessons, and music, and we danced the entire three hours. My ankle is really hurting today, but it was worth it.
Goal-getting + Thoughts
I didn’t have the energy to do much strength training but I have been working on “defunking” my hips. Flexibility and rotation is so important and there has been neglect. I have been a rockstar with hydration, and I took a break from reading. My last book was super heavy and I needed to decompress.
This week, A will be working as a camp assistant, which is just unreal. it’s like we aren’t going to see him at al for that rest of summer, but I’m happy he’s busy and enjoying his activities.
I am linking up with the Weekly Rundown, with Confessions of A Mother Runner and Running on the Fly! Check them out!
How’s the heat by you? Do you salsa dance? At what point do you cut off your run for safety reasons?

“Surface of the sun” is a perfect description. I know it was hot everywhere this week, but the sun here is so intense (on top of the heat and humidity.). A couple weeks ago it was really bothering me, but now I feel like I’m acclimated. Not that it feels great, but I can manage my runs much better.
Sounds like A is having quite a summer! My daughter is now in camp every day, and my son is doing a summer institute in Tennessee… it’s going to be quiet around here! I definitely need a little break.
Hope you get acclimated to the heat soon (yes, some cloud cover helps a lot!) and have some good runs this week.

Things I don’t miss: having to wake up before 5 am to run, having to stop running because it could literally kill you outside. Lol. Yeah here it’s in the upper 80s most days, it may hit 90s in the middle of the day, but it’s still not as bad as Florida.
Great work getting out there and getting it done! I’m really becoming addicted to indoor workouts this summer. It’s amazing how fast you adapt to your environment- after my first 8 months here were spent in cooler temps, my body just can’t handle the heat. Not like it ever could but I feel its worse this summer. I did have a scary thing happen with my breathing a few weeks ago but that happened after the run was finished so I didn’t have to stop mid run! I’m glad I got that blood test done hopefully making the changes I’m making will help keep my blood pressure and cholesterol lower.

While we’re not in the surface of the sun territory, we sure are having our share of Florida style temperatures and humidity this summer! This past weekend was ‘normal’ and it sure felt good. I understand the lack of motivation to get out there when you know it’s going to be a slog. So yes, let yourself walk! I had to do the same thing last week and so now it’s just going to be a thing until fall.
Congrats to your son on his achievement at karate!

I can’t imagine running in your heat. Walking is fine, I say!!
Another active week with some fun activities in the mix.
I love opportunities to dress up! You do it so well.

I always struggle with the heat every summer. Just trying to hold on till fall. You all are super social!!

I think it’s going to be a hot summer! You are smart to play it safe.
I’ve heard of a selfie place around here, but have never been. Looks like you got a cute photo!

We had a day over 80 last week and that was enough for me – I did my run at 6am with the WHOLE WORLD of runners and dog walkers. Then again, it’s not always warm here so it’s a bit of a shock when it’s hot! Good to play it safe and listen to your bodies.

What’s weird is we’ve been having the same weather here in Chicago. It’ll be 100 here again today and it is just stifling. Yesterday’s run featured plenty of walking. I dare not complain though because it’ll be below zero again before I know what hit us. Congrats to A! So impressive!
Kimberly Hatting says
I feel your heat (and humidity). Nothing wrong with walk breaks…they’re a great way to keep the action going without overdoing it.
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
Today was hot and humid on our ride, but on a bike it isn’t as bad because of the breeze created going faster than running.
A’s at that age where there’s always stuff going on to keep him busy. I think that’s key – keep them busy!
