I spoke too soon, last week. The strong start quickly devolved into absolute chaos. Things are NOT back to normal, although we are working in that direction. I’m tired, burned out, and super anxious, but I’m working on getting back to me. Why is it always work?
Sunday
- Cardio: 3.39 miles, walking
Sunday fun day! All I remember is that it was cold AF.
Monday
- Cardio: 5.01 miles, running + 5 miles, hiking
No school in honor of MLK Jr Day. I ran in the morning.
And then we joined some other Scouts for a hike at Ravine Gardens. A is going to Philmont this summer and has to train.
Tuesday
- Cardio: 3.45 miles, walking
This was a super quicky, because…
I had jury duty!
Y’all. I was SO excited for jury duty. I got through all the first screenings and assigned to a pool, and I realized that due to the nature of the case, there was no way I could serve. I am not allowed to discuss details, but it touched VERY close to home and a current situation. At the lunch break, I asked to speak with the judge and explained my concerns. He was incredibly kind and even though I asked to be deferred to a later date, he relieved me from duty for the year. He said not every case is right for every juror, and that was ok. Regardless, I was pretty bummed.
Wednesday
- Cardio: 8.37 miles, running + .47 miles, walking
Let’s run!
The rest of the day was dedicated to the installation of our new carpet. I have zero decent photos because neutrals are hard to photograph and the house is a disaster. But it makes a huge difference.
That evening, I had a Tijuana Flats dinner, trying the new Flautas menu. That’s always fun.
Thursday
- Cardio: 3.44 miles, walking
I don’t know. It was a hard day. Starting right in the morning.
Friday
- Cardio: 6.56 miles, running + 1.66 miles, walking
The day that things fall apart. Of course, we started with a run. Because that’s how Fridays start.
Mr PugRunner got a call that his test results would require a trip to the ER. We packed up and headed out. Long story short, he was admitted to the hospital that night.
Saturday
- Cardio: 2.45 miles, walking
Since I had A and the pugs, I couldn’t stay at the hospital, and visiting hours didn’t start until 9. So I took the time to walk before visiting. My parents came to spend some time with us, which was so supportive and kind.
Sunday
- Cardio: 2.69 miles, walking
More walking before visiting. These were long days. A went home with friends who came to visit, while I spent most of the day with Mr PugRunner.
Monday
- Cardio: 2.58 miles, running + .69 miles, walking
It may come as a huge surprise but I couldn’t get up with my alarm and my run was super short. That’s ok.
I spent time with Mr PugRunner but had to leave to pick up A from work.
Tuesday
- Cardio: 3.06 miles, walking
Tuesday promised to be a long day. I started walking both the dogs and myself.
I made two visits to the hospital, once alone, and once with A, as well as spent a little time with my parents.
Wednesday
- Cardio: 5.71 miles, running + .73 miles, walking
Discharge day!
Since I couldn’t be with Mr PugRunner for his morning battery of tests, I ran instead. My legs were heavy but that was no excuse.
And after a day of waiting, Mr PugRunner came home. It was a relief. He does have a serious chronic condition that is manageable, but it also means a lot of work. we are very lucky it was caught in time.
Thursday
- Cardio: 4.48 miles, walking
I had a kind of restless night, and was really happy to get out for a walk.
Friday
- Cardio: 6.4 miles, running + .55 miles, walking
Things started to feel a little more normal. It was freezing out, but the run was great.
If you follow my on IG, you’ll know I was involved in a big dog rescue. As I headed home from the run, I heard a galloping sound behind me and turned around in time to be jumped on by a very large and very friendly doodle. I saw an older woman walking a few blocks behind and assumed he got away from her. Nope.
Together, we managed to get to his tag (he was VERY wiggly and strong), and called the number of the chip company, who took his ID number and gave us his address. The pupper was NOT interested in walking nicely with us holding his collar, so the woman hurried off to alert the owner and I held on for dear life. The dog twisted up in my legs and knocked me down at one point, but ice worked it out, and he was reunited with his very apologetic owner in no time. The mischievous thing had broken out of his fenced yard! It was hard to be mad about that (accidents happen), but I’m pretty sore.
I had a Yelp event this week, sos after I got cleaned up from my adventure, I headed to Aloha Waffle, a bubble tea and bubble waffle joint. We had our choice of breakfast, lunch, or dessert and I want with the BLT lunch waffle. So good.
Saturday
- Cardio: 3.85 miles, walking
For the first time in a long time, I wasn’t super excited for a weekend. It was just another day. I got in my walk, mostly because it was sunny and cold, and it’s hard to pass up that kind of weather.
A had an all day band rehearsal. The winds ensemble is performing at a huge event in Orlando this year, and it’s a phenomenal honor. They are working so hard and I can’t wait to see them.
Mr PugRunner and I went to a nearby farm store to stock up on produce and poultry. The grocery store is fine, but the local markets are better and more economical. Especially now.
Goal-getting + Thoughts
This week, the goal is to breathe and make space for my feelings. I am incredibly overwhelmed and sensitive, and I’m trying to work through that. This will be a journey, and not one any oof us wanted to take. But here we are and there we will go. We have no choice but to roll with it.
I am linking up with the Weekly Rundown, with Confessions of A Mother Runner and Running on the Fly! Check them out!
How was your week in training? Anyone else love jury duty?
Marcia says
The last time I was called for jury duty the kids were little and I had to scramble for child care. After belong chosen and interviewed by each side for jury selection, it was determined that I was “too close” to the case to be a neutral juror. Turns out it was about a guy who kidnapped and molested a young girl. Ugh. Sending all good vibes for a better week ahead!
Liz Dexter says
Well done for speaking up during jury duty, it’s hard to do that and I’m glad the judge was so kind.
And I’m so sorry to hear about Mr Pugs, that must have been really scary. I know I got pretty anxious when Mr Liz finally slipped into a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis: in fact, having the diagnosis made him work really hard on getting some lifestyle changes done and he’s done really well, having been pretty well ignoring it when he was “pre-diabetic”. I hope you can make some room for yourself in all this, and if that’s the kind of thing that works for you, link up with other people with a loved one with the same condition, as that can help (one of Mr L’s friends and the husband of one of mine all went on the diabetes meds at the same time and it was really helpful to compare notes). Love and strength to you.

Getting outside for exercise is so good for the stress you’re going through right now. I hope your hubby continues to improve and do what’s necessary to keep himself healthy.
Doodles can be huge! I’m glad you found his owner, but sorry you got hurt in the process.

I can only imagine how stressful and scary your husband’s situation is for you all. Remember to take time to take care of yourself as well. Xoxo
Jenny says
Oh, this is very scary and stressful! You’ve really had some challenges lately. But you did a great job of getting outside every day to do SOMETHING, and that’s huge. It sounds like you’re doing a good job of taking care of yourself. I hope this week is a better week!

When the boys were young, I always asked to be excused from jury duty. Now I’ll serve when asked, but if they want to send me to 26th and California (on the south side of Chicago), I always ask for a closer site. It makes no sense to send me there when there is a courthouse 5 miles from where I live. I did have to go downtown a few years ago, which was fine because I could take the train. Oddly enough, I was chosen to serve on the jury. It was a medical malpractice case and my employer was named in the suit. After the case was settled, I asked why they picked me and they said they thought I would be fair. Which is very true!
I am so sorry about your hubs, but am reassured that he is doing better and making the lifestyle changes that need to be made. You got this.

I’m so sorry about all the stress you’re going through right now. The last time I got jury duty, I luckily didn’t have to go in. Hopefully your husband is doing better – thinking of you!

You may remember how much I loathe jury duty. As in I can’t wait til I’m 70 & most likely will no longer have to serve. I’m sorry it was not a good fit for you, but in retrospect that sounds like good thing.
You are do8ng a fabulous job handling everything that’s been thrown your way. It may not feel that way, but trust me, you truly are.

I have been summoned for jury duty so many timers (twice when we were in Iowa City, twice when in Michigan, and a couple of times here in our current town). Ironically, now that I don’t have childcare to coordinate, the summons have stopped. Our son went to Philmont, and the husband went along as a chaperone. They had a blast!

I’m so sorry to hear about everything you’re going through. I’m glad your husband is home again and I hope you have better times ahead of you. it’s good you’ve kept going out for walking and running – it’s good for the soul. Hugs to you!

Hugs to you and your family. Hope things continue to improve.
At least you moving in the right direction.. I know you know that walking and running do help with stress.
I’ve been summed several times and never served… yet.
My week last week was hellish… missing kitten in the cold snowy outdoors and hubby with COVID.
Hoping for some calm this week (and that I don’t get COVID!!!!!!!!!)

Oh, wow, I’m so sorry about your husband’s health, but glad it is manageable. I am sure this is stressful, but you got this. Like others said though, I hope you’re taking time to rest and take of you too! That’s a lot to juggle. If I lived closer, I’d be happy to come walk the dogs for you when you’re in the hospital with your husband.
I have only been called for jury duty once and I was dismissed for no given reason, which was a bummer as I really wanted to be on the case. Good for you for being honest and speaking to the judge, that must have been difficult.

You’ve had so much going on these past two weeks. I am glad that you were able to get out for a few runs and walks to help deal with the stress. Such great news that your husband is home and that his issue is manageable.
That dog rescue sounds a little scary, but also kind fun since the dog was super friendly?
Michelle says
To say you’ve had a lot on your plate would be an understatement! I’m glad your hubby is home now. It’s good to see that you did take time for some walks and runs – so important to make space for yourself in all of this. Lots of hugs to you!

Yikes, I’m so sorry about Mr Pugrunner! Glad he’s home and that his condition is manageable. Thinking of all of you! I hope you’re all feeling more settled soon.
I have Jury Duty coming up in March. Third time I’ve been called, but haven’t been picked yet. The first time I knew one of the attorneys on the case and the second time there weren’t any cases for that day so I didn’t even have to go. We’ll see what this time brings.

I’m so glad the doctors were able to catch your husband’s issue early. With my Dad’s health issues lately I’m a huge advocate of seeking out answers and getting tests done. I’m sure you are all happy that he is back home – what a relief! I hope his issues continue to improve as you make changes. Such a stressful time!
I haven’t been called for jury duty in a very long time. I was an alternate on a grand jury so I got to hear the cases but never voted. It really opened my eyes to what is happening and how different some people’s lives are. I felt truly blessed after hearing those cases.
