Last month, I remember having such high hopes for February. Of course, that just means more room for all the disappointment. So here we are, in March, ready to try again. Want to grab your coffee and join me?
After reading here, head on over to visit Coco and Deborah, our awesome link-up hosts.
Over coffee, I would tell you…
That I got knocked on my butt this week. Hard. I think it started with some dehydration on the weekend, and ended with me taking to my bed for days (nothing contagious – just fatigue, exhaustion, and allergies). Ordinarily, I would shrug this off, but of course, it’s the week before Gate River Run, and I really wanted this to be a great race. Sigh. I’m going to go (it was to expensive to pass and there are no deferrals), but it might be a 9.3 mile walk. Look at me, faking all the enthusiasm.
Over coffee, I would tell you…
That I am SO PROUD of my kiddo. This week was MPA (Music Performance Assessment) Week, with a rehearsal on Tuesday night and the actual adjudication on Thursday. I made sure I was well enough to go to both, and I was blown away by the sheer talent of these students. For those who don’t have band experience, what happens is that the band (in this case, our wind ensemble), performs a selection of 4-5 pieces onstage. When they are finished, they move to a band room, where they have to sight read two never-before-seen-or-heard-until-right-that-moment pieces. They have three minutes to prep for one and five to prep for the next, and then they just have to play. It could never be me. They earned straight Superiors as a second year band, and my heart is so full for them all.
Over coffee, I would tell you…
That I was really excited to be asked back on the Goodr Flamboyance. I am pretty addicted to Goodr sunnies, and I love the whole vibe of the group.
Over coffee, I would tell you…
That I am planning a few me days. Like real, honest to goodness me days. There will be museums and lots of outdoor time, and reading. I also want to get some crafting done. I also plan to try a few new dining and coffee spots, and hit up a new book club.
Over coffee, I would tell you…
That I really need some big wins in March. My unflagging positive attitude is really starting to… well… flag. Time are hard for just about everyone in some ways, and it’s getting harder to dig deep and find the joy and silver linings. I’m going to keep pushing, though. After all, I can always treat myself to more goat yoga.
What would you share over coffee? How was your February? Anyone else feel like they just keep gettin knocked down?

Oh man – I hope you feel better and are able to enjoy the Gate River Run!
Congrats on Goodr! Did you hear about the little mistake they made? I was not selected and they sent the rejection email to 500 people on cc: instead of bcc:. So… a few reply-all messages turned into about 100 messages, a Facebook group and more. Oops!

I heard! What a snafu! I was laughing at some of the posts and screenshots, and I love that more friendships were forged through the mistake.

I am so addicted to Goodrs. You wouldn’t believe how many I have. I should have applied maybe.. but congrats.
Feel better… maybe the race will be just what you need. Have fun!!
runswithpugs says
You should apply! I hope it is what I need. Fingers crossed.
Debbie says
I hope you have fun at your race tomorrow. If you feel the need to take walk breaks do it and just enjoy the day.
Congrats to A’s band!
runswithpugs says
Oh, no worries there. I am fine walking if need be.
Deborah Brooks says
You definitely had some challenges this past month. I really hope March is better for you all. Have a good time this weekend and just remember why you registered and what you love about it
Jenny says
Jenn, i have definitely been in that place where I feel like I keep getting knocked down, over and over again. I wish I had the magical solution for you, other than of course “this too shall pass.” It sounds like you’re doing everything you can, with the time for yourself (and goat yoga.) I hope you feel better and are able to enjoy your race this weekend!
My daughter’s middle school band went to MPA this week too! They got straight superiors as well- our band director is incredible. Congrats to A and his band!
Renée says
I really hope you feel better soon! I know how it goes all too well. And so much of the last couple of YEARS has been disappointment on top of more disappointment. It is exhausting. So I hope you really get those me days in and try not to do too much… it’s ok to also just chill.
I remember my orchestra days and how we would have state championships. So much practise and frustration and yelling (i guess the teacher/conductor can’t really yell at the students now?), ugh. But we had to do the sight reading not only for the whole orchestra but also for soloists! it was so nerve-wracking. takes a lot of mental capacity to get through those things so well done to A and the other students! It also feels so amazing and accomplished to get through these competitions.
Congrats on your goodr ambassadorship again!
Wendy says
Enjoy your race today!! it sounds like a perfect antidote to the doldrums. Wear some fun sunnies and enjoy yourself! Soak it all in. We get to do this!!!
Kimberly Hatting says
I hope your race goes well, and maybe it will be the boost you need. My race isn’t until 4:00 this afternoon, so I have a lot of time to get in the racing mode (though I don’t plan on “racing” it with 100% effort…it’s too fun of an event to take it seriously, LOL).
runswithpugs says
4 in the afternoon is hard! I hope it was great!
Michelle says
I hope you can still enjoy your race! Just walk and soak in all the good vibes.
Congrats on Goodr! And a big congrats to A’s band – sounds like an intense event!
I love that you are intentionally planning some “me days” – sounds like a fabulous idea and a great way to put March on the right track.
runswithpugs says
I really need a good March.
Coco says
Huge congrats to your son! It sounds like he and his bandmates are truly talented!
Sorry February was a drag. Hopefully March will be better.
runswithpugs says
They really are. As a non-music person, I am always in awe.
Zenaida Arroyo says
Congrats to your son! I am glad you are scheduling some “me” days. Looks like it will be fun! Congrats too on your ambassadorship! I don’t wear sunglasses but do like the ones in your photo. The pink ones are my favorite.
runswithpugs says
The sun is super strong here, so my eyes are sensitive.
I am looking forward to my me days so much!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
Congrats to A for his music performance! I played in the band as a kid and I wish ours was as talented as your son’s, but it’s such an amazing experience! Team clarinet and alto sax 🙂
I hope you have a better month, I’ll be thinking of you. Me time is a must and really does make a difference, even if they are small moments that you can squeeze into a day.
runswithpugs says
I was in chorus, so this is a whole new world. To listen to these kids play is amazing. They are so incredibly talented, and they are all so invested.
Thanks for the thoughts. I’m trying to keep my head above water.

I can tell you this: each year, for the last five years, I think: THIS will be the year that’s better. And each year has been worse than the last. BUT . . . not every day is tough. There are always good times. We’re hard wired to notice the negative; noticing the good just takes a bit more effort. It’s there.
As they say, you can treat every day as a miracle — the choice is yours.
Dehydration is no joke. I’ve fainted twice from it (over 30 years apart!). And I’m a good hydrator!

I’ve never had a hydration problem, and I’ve actually been forcing myself to drink soooo much water. But I think my body just said “we’re done.”
I was always able to find the good, but lately, I’m just so tired of being “on” every day. Every minute. Every second. I need a break.
