(This Global Running Day post is updated from an earlier version, published on June 2, 2021)
Happy Global Running Day! It’s time for a whole 24 hours dedicated to my favorite sport! Who’s ready to celebrate?
The whole purpose of Global Running Day is to honor running: it doesn’t matter if you’re new to the sport or a seasoned veteran, if you have a rack full of medals or if you prefer to just log miles on your own, if you’re fast or slow, if you’re old or young. So how do we do this?
Go For A Run
Well, obviously! The primary way to honor a day about the celebration of running is… to run! You can go it alone or with friends. Our local running store offers a group run in honor of the day, but I won’t be able t attend due to a schedule conflict. Instead, I’m taking on a free virtual run through Fit2Run (register here).
Register For A Race
Adding another race to the calendar is always a great way to honor Global Running Day. I’m working on my “one race a month” plan, and it seems like this is next up. I’ll be taking on this evening event with two of my favorite running friends by my side. It’s going to be fabulous.
Commit To A Challenge
This year, I am proud to be making my third attempt at Streaking With The Cool Kids. The challenge? For every day in June, participants commit to run, walk, or jog one consistent mile. No matter what, I walk every day, so I see this as a completely reasonable goal. I am well on my way, and intend to continue streaking through June and as long as I can.
Treat Yo’self!
I am very reward driven, so treating myself to something new on a running “holiday” seems like a great way to celebrate. With all the miles I’m running and walking, shoes are always high on my list of running needs, I can always use more shoes. These are my most recent pair. I wonder which ones will be next?
Encourage someone in their running
Part of the joy of running is having other people join in. If you know someone who is thinking about running or has mentioned not knowing where to start, reach out and encourage them. Invite them to join you or your group for a few miles. Offer to go with them to get fitted for new shoes. Show this person how welcoming our community can be!
How do you plan to celebrate Global Running Day?
Renée says
am I a real runner if I don’t run on GRD? I’m going to spinning tonight so no time to run I’m afraid 🙁
I may sign my husband up for a race though -I think I talked him into Dublin RnR today!!

Of course you are! Spin is still moving, in my book! And you run a ton, so it’s all good!
Definitely sign up for that race!!!
Jenny Albertson says
Today was a strength training day for me. I think this happened last year too. So I love that you gave more suggestions on celebrating it! I have a race I’m eyeing coming up so I’ll maybe celebrate by signing up for it.
runswithpugs says
We planned it so that we could get in a run! It worked out great!
Buty yes, there are so many ways to celebrate. I don’t thin little man is going to get his blocks in – he’s got karate and it was a busy day, but we did what we could!
Kimberly Hatting says
I did my #5at5 earlier this morning, so my celebration started before the sunrise 😉 My first experience with running was in elementary school PE, and it was miserable, too!
runswithpugs says
Mine too! Great job!
It’s awful that so many people got such a rough start with running. I remember slogging around that track and hating every second of it 🙁
Stephanie says
I did not realize there was a global running day! Currently I am not doing any running due to my personal goals BUT I did do a HIIT workout on an elliptical today 🙂
runswithpugs says
If you’re still being active and moving, I think it still counts in its own way!
The elliptical is no joke! Great job!
Rachel says
I ran, I signed up for a race (doh!), and I coached Kids Run the Nation for the last month and we had our last race on Saturday! I’d say I did a pretty good job celebrating this year. 🙂

You had a busy and productive day! Way to go!
Love the Kids Run the Nation initiative!
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
It is so tempting not to sign up for all the races today and buy all the running gear! Hope you had a great day

I know! It’s crazy how the FOMO comes out when there are so many great offers available!
Andrea says
I had no idea there was a Global Running Day! I’ll have to plan for it next year 🙂
runswithpugs says
It’s the first Wednesday of June – not the same date every year so definitely have to keep an eye out for it. There are a lot of cool events and promotions going on this time of year!
De Bolton says
I injured my ankle about 6 months ago and just cleared to jog. Think today would be a good day to start. Thank you for the ideas
runswithpugs says
I hope you had a great run!
Catrina says
That streak sounds like a sensible goal! I like that includes walking as it’s a good way to keep active without getting injured.
And you’re already 5 miles in! Great job, Jenn!
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
Great ideas! I will be running today, and I’m sure there will be lots of emails coming through with discounts on running products or races. We’ll see what happens:)
Shathiso says
I had a beautiful run this morning to celebrate… but now that you mention treating yourself to a gift… I may have to venture out and get a little something! 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
I do love a day celebrating our favorite sport! Treating yourself to a new pair of shoes is always nice. Have a great day
Rachel says
I should definitely not treat myself this year… I’ve got so many shoes my husband may divorce me. But, a new Garmin wouldn’t be so bad… 😉
Lauren says
Happy Global Running Day! I can’t wait to get out for my run today and maybe I’ll sign up for a race! 🙂
Jenny says
Ooooh… I like the idea to treat myself! Because of my gimpy hip, I had to do a pool run this morning (shouldn’t that be illegal on Global Running Day?) but I could still treat myself to some cool gear! Thanks for the suggestion.
Denise says
There are a lot of discounts on races today so I’ll probably sign up for a race or two. I’ll be running later with the run club I recently joined. (And I’ll be wearing my new shorts, in honor of the day of course!)
Kimberly Hatting says
I just noticed my previous comment, and I can repeat it…my GRD celebration started with another #5at5 this morning 😉 We had almost complete daylight already, at 5:00!
Darlene S Cardillo says
Happy Global running Day.
I do run and then hiked in the rain after work.
I also treated myself to a new tank.
Chocolaterunsjudy says
I’m not big on running because it’s a National whatever day — seriously, there are so many of them. But it happened to be a recovery run for me, so I did.
Summer races are hard enough up here so good luck!
Encouraging other runners is a great thing to do.

Love these ideas! There are a lot of deals out there for runners on GRD so take advantage of them! I did get in a run to celebrate.
I tried a streak once. I lasted less than a week. It’s just not my thing. 🙂
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I haven’t done a running streak in so long! Eventually I will need to give it another try, but no longer than a month! I wish I could have done some shopping for Global Running Day, but I didn’t really see any deals!
runswithpugs says
Yeah, I’m not planning to go longer than 30 days. That’s enough.
Laura says
I honestly forgot it was national running day until I saw all of the posts, but I did get in a run and buy some new gear!
runswithpugs says
Perfect!
Debbie says
Great ideas! Sadly I can’t run today to celebrate because I hurt my knee a few days ago (I fell, such a klutz). So I guess the next best thing is to read running blogs!
Jenny says
I ran today! I would have preferred a long trail run to celebrate the day, but like you I had scheduling challenges. But any running is good running!
I love those shoes… Brooks has the best designs.
I think I’ll celebrate the day by signing up for my next race. Thanks for all the ideas!
Catrina says
I ran my mid-week long run! It was a bit of a slog, but I reminded myself that I’m grateful to be running and that I’m not injured.
So cool that you’re doing a streak! June is a great month to do that.
