That’s right: next week we go back to school, which means summer is ending. For many reasons, this is not the way I hoped summer would end, but again, we are rolling with it and trying to make the best of all the things. As we do.
Sunday
- Cardio: 1.09 treadmill miles
We had a super late night, getting back to the hotel close to midnight. I went to the hotel gym in the morning, and rushed through a quick mile, expecting the boys to be up and ready to leave when I returned.
That was not the case: we were a slow-moving bunch. Eventually, we packed up, checked out, headed to breakfast, and started for home.
And for the first time, the drive felt not quite so eternal. Yay!
We reunited with the pugs, and then got busy prepping for the week ahead. It was a whirlwind weekend, but so worth it.
Monday
- Cardio: 4 miles, running + 2.75 miles, walking
And right back to it.
The heat made it hard to feel strong, but I pushed as hard as felt safe.
A had a day off, which was quite a relief for him, as well. He’s been working hard and hasn’t had much in the line of a break.
Tuesday
- Cardio: 5.24 miles, walking
Happy August! Let’s do this! We started the month with a walk.
Then it was a day of meetings. Boo. I also brought A and his friend to the school for their orientation day. They can get their schedules, lockers, PE uniforms, set up lunch accounts, etc. No pictures because they wanted to go alone. A opted for no locker (he will just use his band locker), and was thrilled with his final schedule, which include jazz band, wind ensemble and American sign language.
Wednesday
- Cardio: 5 miles, running + 2.52 miles, walking
Alone again for another run. This one actually felt much better.
So much work to do during the day, and I finally had just enough of a break to have dinner and attend the first Arts Boosters Board Meeting of the year. It was almost three hours long, but we have so many good ideas, so I am hopeful it will all amount to great things.
Thursday
- Cardio: 5.08 miles, walking
First a walk.
And then new hair! I was ready for a change, so this smoky dark was just the thing.
Friday
- Cardio: 4.3 miles, running + 2.84 miles, walking
TGIF! Hopefully, this will be my last lonely run, but we will see!
I hurried home, showered and changed, and then drove A and my parents to Daytona, so they could treat him to a little back to school shopping at his favorite store: Bass Pro Shops. We also had a yummy lunch.
Back home again, and then we collected everyone to meet up with my college roommate and her family at the beach! We haven’t seen them since last summer so it was wonderful to catch up!
Saturday
- Cardio: 2.36 miles, walking
Another quick walk to round out the week.
I was in a bit of a hustle. I am dog sitting, but also helping at a volunteer car wash. And then another evening with my friend and her family. So grateful for these moments.
Thoughts + Goals
This was sort of a weird week. I was hopeful that we would get in a few last fun things, but with meetings, orthodontist appointments, work, and more, it just didn’t happen. We pivoted, of course, because that’s what we do best.
So what now?
I have a daunting week ahead. Getting settled into batching new content, meet the teacher, and the first day of sophomore year. Yikes! It’s a new carpool schedule, and a new work schedule. And on top of that, want to add gym time to my runs. Baby steps. We will see how it goes.
How was your week?

Great week of activity for you…even with all the other non-fitness commitments. Well done!

Thank you!
Deborah Brooks says
You all go back to school early! Looks like you got a lot done this week and look very smiley 🙂 Hope this week is just as good
runswithpugs says
Yes! And get out early! I think it’s better that way!

I’ll bet people who don’t have kids are thinking “What do you mean, summer is ending? Summer doesn’t end till September 21st!” Ha. My daughter starts school on Thursday as well.
Nice job getting all those runs and walks in, during such a busy week. Good luck with back to school! It’s going to be a transition, for sure.
runswithpugs says
As you know, summer here is eternal. Sigh.
Good luck with your back to school as well!
Darlene S Cardillo says
I am still thinking that there’s still a month left of summer!!
We had cooler temps and I worked from home all last week so I’d say that it was a better running week.
Next week is very busy and the weather looks rainy so who knows when or if I’ll get out there. But we have to be flexible. Running is not our careers.
runswithpugs says
There is no such thing as cooler right now. Ugh. it’s just brutal here. Like literally too hot to do anything. I am ready for fall.
Wendy says
End of summer? Not at all. Like you said, just a pivot! There’s still a lot of time to enjoy. I will admit that as much as I miss having the boys around, I don’t miss that hustle of school. One summer they were doing construction on their school and the first day was after Labor Day. That truly was the best summer ever!

I love the idea of a later start, but to be done before May is over is nice, too.
Susanne says
That’s early to start school! Or, maybe not, haha, it’s just been too long.
Well done getting all the running and walking done, in the middle of all other arrangements!
runswithpugs says
I know a few people who started last week! It’s early, but we wrap early, too.
Coco says
I don’t blame your guys for not wanting to rush home from vacation, although I do like to get an early start to beat traffic, etc.
A 3 hour meeting sounds brutal! Glad you thought it was worthwhile.
I love your hair!
runswithpugs says
Thank you!
I can barely make it to 45 minutes in a meeting. We had a lot to cover, but I needed a nap and a snack.
San says
You had a great week of runs/walks – I am sure you’re happy to fit it all in during this busy transition time. It’s funny because so many parents comment on how summer is over because school starts again… for me, summer usually goes until at least the middle of September… but then again, I don’t adhere to the school calendar 😉
runswithpugs says
It feels good to get the fitness in.
In fairness, summer is forever here. So the start of school seems a good place to mark the end.
Chocolaterunsjudy says
I do not know how you get it all done! Good you thing you have that occasional time away — although even that doesn’t sound so restful.
Love the hair!
Here’s to a grwat school year for A.
Chocolaterunsjudy recently posted…Hello, Fall: 7/31 – 8/6 WRD

I just white knuckle through! This trip wasn’t relaxing but it was fun!

Wow, school already…summer flew by! London schools don’t go back for awhile, but I don’t think they were out for summer until mid July. Summer is nearly done in mid July! (in my mind, ha!)
Great week of getting out there and fitting it in around all the other commitments 🙂
Debbie says
Nice week of getting it all done!
Here’s to a fabulous school year ahead for A!
Melissa says
Ahh this time of year with back to school is crazy … good luck with all the newness – new sophomore year, new carpool, etc. Don’t beat yourself up too much if you don’t get in your gym time right away. You got this!
runswithpugs says
I need to do it, and I’m so lazy about it. Ugh.
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
Ah, the back to school craziness! I do miss that (sniff!!). I hope A has an amazing year! Sounds like a schedule shake up will be a bit challenging, but fun. Fingers crossed it all goes well!
runswithpugs says
I do hope it’s awesome!
Renée says
wow what a week. a lot going on Jenn. Proud of you for getting workouts in regardless. I know it feels like summer is over because A is going back to school and all but maybe in the coming weeks you can still squeeze a bit of summer into your life. x
runswithpugs says
Well, now it’s time for “Mommy Summer!”
