When you are deep in a fitness routine, it becomes crucial to learn skills to avoid burnout. Burnout occurs when you overwork yourself to a point where you are no longer benefitting from an activity, physically, mentally, or emotionally. It can absolutely derail your momentum and motivation. Here are five ways we combat the dreaded fitness burnout.
Everybody’s So Creative!
No, really! Being creative with your fitness is a sure fire way to avoid burnout. Doing the same, repetitive, boring thing day in and day out can really bring you down. Freshen up your fitness routine with new workouts, new routes, new exercises, and new locations.
Give Yourself A Break
Literally. Getting enough rest is a key component in the battle to avoid burnout. Working out is great, but our bodies need rest. When you are refreshed and recovered, it’s easier to stave off the feeling of fatigue and overwork. Can’t stop, won’t stop? Active recovery, where you treat yourself to a stroll, gentle bike ride, or easy afternoon of gardening, is a valid option, too.
Swap Out Your Activity
Tired of the same ol’ same ol’? Feel yourself in a rut? That might mean it’s time to trade up. Do you normally burn calories lifting in the gym? Take it outside and get your actual row on! Used to running> Maybe switch it up for a hearty hike. There are so many ways to get your heart rate up and build strength. There’s no need to stick to just one!
Set Some New Goals
If you feel like burnout is threatening your fitness joy, maybe it’s time to set some new goals. Shifting focus can offer renewed determination and refresh your desire to keep going! It’s worth a shot when things get tough!
Let It Go
At the end of the day, listening to your body is certainly the most intuitive way to avoid burnout. If you notice your heart isn’t in your workout on a regular basis, you start to develop the kind of aches and pains that come with overuse, or you aren’t finding joy in fitness, let yourself move to something else. A break or a shift can be temporary or permanent, depending on your specific feelings.

Yes, I think switching it up is the most effective coping vice. It adds variety & hopefully works different muscles.
