You know you’re getting older when that road to recovery is longer and takes more time. I am on the struggle bus this week, and would pay actual money for a nap. In fact, I might even be open to a massage, that’s how rundown I am. Sigh.
Sunday
- Cardio: 1 mile, walking (plus)
Sunday dawned absolutely bright and beautiful in New Orleans, and we were so happy to be done with the awful rain. Our plan was to eat breakfast, hit up the Carousel Bar, go to the Krewe of Barkus Dog Parade, and then maybe head to City Park.
We managed the first three things, and then we just partied the rest of the day. That’s the thing about Mardi Gras, I have found. No matter what the plans, it all spirals out of control very quickly.
Monday
- Cardio: 1 mile, walking (plus)
We woke up to another cold and windy day, with a light mist. Yuck. We had planned to go to a jazz brunch at 10AM before going to the airport, but I was hungry at 6AM when we woke up, and I was nervous about getting to the airport on time. I am about the worst flier on the planet. Seriously.
So we had beignets and eggs at a cafe, walked around for some fresh air, and then ubered to the airport, in preparation of a looong day. Our flight to Atlanta was at 2PM, but then our next flight to Jacksonville didn’t board until almost 9PM. We just wandered the airport, had dinner, and read.
We were very, very happy to be home.
Tuesday
- Cardio: 3.71 miles, walking
- Strength: Arms + Abs, 50 minutes
Despite our late arrival, I was happy to meet J for our walk.
And I was also happy to get back in the gym for an upper body workout.
In the afternoon, we went to the Alligator Farm for a little project. In return, we got to spend some time with the Galapagos Tortoises, and the sloths. I’m not saying it was the best day ever, but it was close.
Wednesday
- Cardio: 6.03 miles, running + 2.55 miles, walking
I was really excited to run again, but it was a hard one. I managed, and I’m grateful for the colder weather, but I was a little achy when I was done.
For once, I listened to my body, and took a pass on the gym. I just didn’t want to do more legs.
Today was a wonderful day: it was finally time for Hadestown! We had a double date with A and his girlfriend, and it was the best night. Honestly, it was one of the best performances I’ve seen to date, especially at our local theater. And the cast was amazing, almost better than the original cast recording. Our seats were great and we all loved every second of it. Oh, and even cooler? A patron had extra tickets in the first ten rows, and offered them to the kids! They were over the moon!
Thursday
- Cardio: 3.57 miles, running + walking
- Strength: Legs + Abs, 50 minutes
J and I met up again – we are starting Couch to 5K with her again, and that felt pretty good. I also forced myself to do my leg workout, and it went fine. My legs just feel heavy, and while it’s annoying, I’ll be ok.
Friday
- Cardio: 5.8 miles, running + 2.87 miles, walking
I did a little running on my own, and then a little Couch to 5K with J.
And then I took a pass on the gym., just so my workouts will line up next week (arms on running days, and legs on off days).
In the meantime, I’ve been unsettled in the house. Despite massive amounts of work to do, I promptly busied myself with important tasks like washing the curtains, hanging lights on the patio, and cleaning windows. I am also planning to purge things, one drawer/cabinet at a time, and I think that will be exciting.
Saturday
Cardio
Did this girl sleep in? You know it. I have been so freaking tired, and I just needed a day off.
I spent the day cleaning and organizing, along with some cooking for our Super Bowl festivities. I really don’t care either way, but since Mr PugRunner wanted to do something, I agreed to have something Taylor Swift themed. Am I a Swiftie? Not really. But I thought it would be funny all the same.
Thoughts + Goals
So we have two races done in two months, and moving on to what should be #3: The Gate River Run in early March. I’m a little nervous, but mostly excited, and it’s going to be a great event.
We are also hoping to have a fun Galentine’s AND Valentine’s Day this week. I love little themed days, so this should be good.
Do you celebrate Galentine’s/Valentine’s Day? Are you watching the Super Bowl? Ever been to Mardi Gras?

Sounds like a good recovery week after your race! I don’t find cleaning or purging exciting, lol, and your idea of one drawer at a time sounds like a good plan!
i hope you’re feeling better in the week ahead.
Darlene S. Cardillo says
Like Wendy said you had a solid week. Always with fitness and fun mixed in.
90 sec running intervals have jump started my recovery. So happy about that.
Don’t celebrate. Will be in Fla again for Valentines Day.
I’m very nervous about my March half.
Jenny says
Um… sounds like you partied pretty hard at Mardi Gras- I would need a recovery week too after that! But nice job of getting your workouts in anyway.
Yes, plans for the Super Bowl (well, we have a fun dinner planned and we’ll be watching) and no plans for Valentine’s Day yet. I don’t know, Wednesdays are hard. They don’t seem very festive! I think my daughter is planning some sort of Galentine’s event, so i’ll live vicariously though her.
I want to hear all about your celebrations! You always seem to make things fun.
Deborah Brooks says
Rest is not a 4 letter word and there is no shame in taking more rest. In fact, it’s super smart! Would you like to come to my house and organize? 🙂 Hope you have a great week ahead!
Melodie says
Looks like you guys had a good trip! The alligator farm sounds like a fun place. You had a great recovery week! It seems like you listened to what your body needed. We are having our neighbors over for a super bowl party and I am excited about the food!
Debbie says
It sounds like you had a fun time in New Orleans (I’ve never been there), but too bad the weather wasn’t consistently great. Good job on getting back into your fitness routine once home.
How fun that the kids got to move up closer to the stage and how nice of the person to share the tickets.
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
I do have some decorating plans on my agenda for February. I think it will be good to have some plans to keep me busy now that the kids are in college. We will watch the Super Bowl, but only for the commercials! I haven’t thought much about Valentine’s day… I need to get on that quick! 🙂 Have a good one!
Kimberly Hatting says
Bummer on the weather in NOLA. Never been to Mardi Gras there, but we did Mardi Gras in Mobile many, many years ago. It was fun, but almost overwhelming, with all the parades and parties.
Marcia says
Looks like a busy week! I’ve been to Madi Gras in NOLA many years ago and I’m still thinking of the beignets we had at Cafe Du Monde. Haha! Other than fun Valentine’s Day care packages for my girls, I’ve got nothing for my husband. I hope he doesn’t care!
Susanne says
Oh, you went to New Orleans during Mardi Gras! How fun! That little vampire bottle looks intriguing!
Looks like you had a good active week despite being so tired. I don’t celebrate Galentine’s or Valentine’s but we have Pancake Tuesday which is the thing here instead of just Shrove Tuesday.
Sounds great with those races planned.
Jessie says
Your superbowl party looked amazing- especially considering you AREN’T a swiftie and weren’t into it???
I have heard great things about Hadestowna and its in London now, so I plan to go.
I feel like at my age, I need a lot more time to recovery from any parties- I still enjoy it, but then I’m beat for a long time! It looks like so much fun though but always nice to be home and back on a routine.
runswithpugs says
Oh, please go! I don’t think you’ll regret it!
I love having people over, but my social battery drains FAST! We used to do super elaborate parties all the time, but it does get harder to snap back.
