Y’all. This week. What a whirlwind. Literally. We had the eclipse. And then we had a whole EF1 tornado in my literal neighborhood. I need a nap. Let’s get into it.
Sunday
- Cardio: 3.17 miles, walking
I started the day with a little lie-in and a walk.
From there, it was off to brunch with good friends. It was the most glorious day, and we had a great time chatting about summer vacations.
Monday
- Cardio: 7.43 miles, running
Happy Eclipse Day!
I started the morning with a solid run, followed by errands. I wanted to be in the house by the time the event happened. It’s also worth noting I got a late start because there was an armed and dangerous attempted kidnapping suspect on the loose (he has since been apprehended) and I didn’t want to be out in the dark.
A stayed home from school: it was an excused absence and a wash of a day. I had eclipse glasses, so we figured it would be more meaningful to have him here, rather than dismissing into the actual event.
We all got to watch it (about 70% totality, so cool but not as cool as the whole thing), and then we celebrated with an eclipse “party.”
Tuesday
- Cardio: 2.20 miles, running + 2.86 miles, walking
- Strength: Arms + Abs, 50 minutes
And back to normal. I started the morning with a Couch To 5K session with J, before moving on to the gym.
It was a busy day that ended in several meetings. I was really happy to get to bed that night.
Wednesday
- Cardio: 5.62 miles, running
I had to skip the gym again, but I made sure my run was solid.
My parents came over and then we all made the drive to Orlando for the MFA Festival at the Dr. Phillips Center. A’s wind ensemble performed an absolutely brilliant program, and then attended a super productive clinic afterwards. I was so proud of them all.
After the show, we said goodbye: we went home, while they changed to listen to the UCF bands perform at an evening concert, spent the night, and went to Universal the next day. Lucky ducks.
Thursday
- Cardio: 5.44 miles, walking
- Strength: Legs + Abs, 50 minutes
I was on my own on Thursday, which was a bit of a bummer. I was also a little sore, so I took advantage of that fact to walk it out. Something was very off.
I went to the gym, and while I had a good workout, I was absolutely not right. I figured I would head to Target to pick up a few things I needed for work, and then get myself together.
While I was shopping, I got this blaring alert on my phone, in addition to text messages and robo calls.
I’m sorry, what? No one else seemed too worried, but then Mr PugRunner called me. The alert was for our neighborhood/part of town, 20 minutes away. He told me not to come home, that he had the dogs on leashes and was preparing to take shelter, but that he could see the tornado passing behind our house.
I stayed put, trying to watch the storm on the radar, but you all know how Target WiFi can be. Finally, I got back in touch with him. He said he was fine and the house was fine. I waited a little longer to make sure the funnel was out of the area, got some snacks and a caffeinated beverage and made the drive home.
No one was hurt. However, there was some damage in our neighborhood and the surrounding area. We saw damaged roofs, ripped off shingles and shutters, uprooted trees, knocked down fences, overturned trailers, and exploded windows. I was really glad that A was in another part of the state, and that I wasn’t home to see it happen.
A did get home around 9 after a wonderful day. Of course, he got the news while he was at Universal, and called to check on us. His classmates were put on lockdown at the school, and everyone was made to lay down in the gym and cafeteria until the storm passed. Ugh.
Friday
- Cardio: 2.23 miles, running + 2.47, walking
Oh, Friday. After all the drama of the week, a run was just the thing.
I showed and changed quickly, to meet my beautiful friend for coffee and breakfast at the new Foxtail.
Two big work calls, and then just a night at home. I had a race on Saturday, but I didn’t even put out my Flat Runner.
Saturday
- Cardio: Biscuits + Bubbles 5K (3.1 miles, running)
Race Day! This was my Easter gift: the Biscuits + Bubbles 5K! I got there a little early, because I wasn’t familiar with the area (or parking), and had a great race. Another post-injury PR, by the skin of my teeth. I’ll share the full report on Wednesday for the Runners’ Roundup Linkup!
In the evening, we went to the local fair, which was pretty fun.
Thoughts + Goals
I’m just tired. There was a lot going on with the criminals on the run, the solar eclipse and the twister. I’m hoping the rest of the weekend is more chill and quiet and I can get back to it next week!
How was your week in training? Does the weather affect you physically? Ever seen a tornado up close and personal?

Congrats on your race and new PR! That was a great way to end a very dramatic week. I’m glad no harm was done from the tornado! I actually saw coverage of it on our local news,
runswithpugs says
Yikes! That’s crazy that we made it all the way to your news!
Deborah Brooks says
Congrats on your race and PR! That always feels good. Glad there was no damage with the tornado. If you have to be stranded somewhere I guess Target is a fun place to be lol. Your eclipse party looked fun!
runswithpugs says
I’m telling you. I had food and water, and lots of pillows and books. I was going to be just fine.
Jenny says
Oh wow that’s so crazy- I heard there was a tornado up there. I’ve never seen one close up like that! And how crazy for A to be in Orlando and hear that a tornado is going through his town! Yes, you guys need a calm week. Looking forward to the race recap- congrats on the PR!
runswithpugs says
Yup. We have a day off on Friday and so it’s a short week. We also had plans cancel on Saturday, so that makes things ease up.
Jessie says
You host amazing themed parties! So creative.
Oh wow, that tornado pic- how scary! So glad your house and everyone was okay….what a wild week!
runswithpugs says
Not my favorite week for sure.
Susanne says
Congrats on your PR!! As Wendy said, what a good way to end the week.
How scary with the tornado, I’m so glad all of you are ok, and the house too. Interesting how you felt something was wrong!
Melissa says
Congrats on the great race! How scary to have a tornado right in your neighborhood- thank goodness you were at Target! Thats so interesting you felt off and could tell something was wrong!
runswithpugs says
I was also crazy tired after the eclipse. Like I could have just fallen asleep in my tracks. Annoying.
And yes. Target felt so safe lol.
Coco says
That tornado sounds scary — and those clouds look intimidating!
Congrats on the race!
That ice cream cone photo is amazing!
runswithpugs says
It was huge! FortunaTely not very strong.
I love fair soft serve. Yum.

When I was in middle school we were detained in lockdown due to a tornado that ended up hitting the elementary school, which was a the end of the block from where I lived. My sister was in Kinder at the time and just as they were headed toward the school basement a telephone pole came through the classroom window. It was terrifying and there was SO much damage but thankfully everyone was ok. Tornadoes are quite a scare. Glad you’re all ok and came away unscathed. Congrats on the race and PR!
runswithpugs says
We usually don’t get them here. Maybe a water spout or some cyclonic activity but not an EF worthy funnel! I don’t like it.
Kimberly Hatting says
I’ve seen a lot of tornado stuff, but none of that compares to the derecho (August 2020). The damage that went down in about 20 minutes was phenomenal, and took a long time to clean-up and recover (over a year). It’s crazy what the weather can do! It’s good that you were alright and didn’t sustain any damage.
runswithpugs says
I remember that storm. Absolutely awful. I am so scared of tornadoes, and not really thrilled that they have hopped on to my 2024 bingo card.
Debbie says
Congrats on your post-injury PR!
Tornados are so scary. They just happen giving you no time to prepare (or flee).
Stacie E Seidman says
Ooof. That’s a lot for one week. Glad the criminals were apprehended and that you were safe from the tornado. What a week. Can’t wait to read about your race!
