Oh, that’s right! You know what time it is! The end of April means we are opening up the runfessional and baring our souls (and soles!) Who’s ready?
For this month’s trip to the runfessional, let’s join up with Marcia’s Healthy Slice…
Let’s begin by runfessing…
That even though I ran a great race at the Biscuit & Bubbles 5k last weekend, it didn’t feel like it in the moment. Does this mean running is getting easier for me? I hope so.
Next, I’ll runfess…
That this weather is HARD on my ankle. The constant temperature swings, rain, and pressure drops make the hardware in my right leg so uncomfortable. I settle into things quickly enough but it is unnerving when I start moving and feel all the feelings. Nothing is wrong with the materials, and I don’t really have any swelling or pain after the fact, but my ankle talks to me, and this season, it’s been loud.
I would like to runfess that…
The price for my regular May race has gone up! Boo! It’s ok, I’ll pay it, but man. I should have registered earlier. It’s always a great time, and this IS the race I try to run every year, so I guess I just have to go for it. And next year I’ll plan better. I usually register way in advance and I’m not sure why I didn’t this year. Oh well. Lesson learned.
While I’m runfessing…
I’d like to share that I need to get in the head space to put together a training plan for a half marathon. Yup. I’m going to do it. It will be a new-to-me race (Best Damn Race Safety Harbor), and I’m cautiously optimistic. I ran in Safety Harbor two years ago, but I wasn’t feeling great (bad allergies), we bailed on the alf, and I don’t remember much about the 5K or 10K courses (other than the fact that we ordered Starbucks along the way). But that was another time.
My final runfession is…
Leg day has been hard, friends. It used to be that I dreaded upper body workouts, but now, I drag my feet for lower body. Does that mean my legs are tired from more miles? That I’m pushing myself harder than in the past? That my arms are just getting stronger with every passing day? You got me. I’m almost at 100 gym sessions (who am I?), and I plan to keep on going. I feel like there are positive changes in my body composition, and that makes me happy.
Any training tips for the half in January? How to quantify fitness-related changes? What do you have to runfess today?

Wait you ordered Starbucks during a race. Please explain!
Have fun at your races!

LOL! So we were not taking this particular race seriously at all. Some of us were injured. Some of us were in a bad place. We were all there fora good time. There was a big group of us half-heartedly jogging/walking and it was getting hot. The route happened to go past a Starbucks, so we started talking about how great it would be to have an iced coffee. One of the woman said I’ll order on my app. I was feeling speedy, so I offered to go with her. We left our friends walking, ran a block off the route, grabbed five coffees and ran back to our friends.
I regret absolutely nothing.

That’s the best race story ever!
Kimberly Hatting says
I do so much leg work with biking & stairs, that the “extra” strength work for legs/glutes feels excessive. I do it because it’s still working the muscles in different ways, but I runfess I keep it at the minimum LOL.
Darlene S. Cardillo says
I ignore leg machines at the gym.
And racing is always hard. Even 5ks stress me out.
I’m so used to ankle pain. It’s better than not running. I try to tell myself that.
runswithpugs says
Oh, absolutely it is. But it’s still uncomfortable.
Jenny says
Bummer on the ankle pain (I feel you on this one!) but everything else sounds like it’s going well! 100 gym sessions- that’s s milestone. Leg day is always hard for me.
I remember the race where you ordered Starbucks in the middle! Hee hee. That was epic.
runswithpugs says
I had forgotten all about it and then I found the photo! What a day!
Debbie says
I’m sorry to hear that the hardware put in your ankle is so bothersome this time of year. I’d never really thought of that, but it certainly makes sense. Hope you get that change in weather that you need soon!
runswithpugs says
I’m so lucky that I can run and do so many things, but I can tell that it’s not supposed to be in my body, if that makes sense. It’s fine in that it doesn’t need to come out, but the sensations on “weather” days or when it’s been overused is something I can’t describe.
Coco says
Congrats on 100 gym workouts! I tend to go lighter on leg day than I used to for fear of angering my hamstring. I think any strength work is going to help even if it’s not going to overload or failure.
LOL on the Starbucks. Even *I* haven’t done that!
runswithpugs says
LOL! It was the best memory.
Marcia says
I’ve always fantasized about ordering Starbucks during a race but I’ve never done it! Ha! I too always loathe leg day. I enjoy upper body work but man those legs… ouchie!
runswithpugs says
This is your sign that it’s super fun to do! I would do it again in a heartbeat.
Deborah Brooks says
Congrats on hitting 100 gym sessions! I’d say you have established a great routine. I do leg workouts 3x on average and some days they just feel harder than others. Keep it up and you will see great results
runswithpugs says
I hate that lunges are so hard. It never used to be like that and I know that I may never get those back, but it makes me sad. I’ll get over it, I’m sure.
Michelle says
Your Starbucks order during the race is priceless 🙂
Great job with your gym sessions!
runswithpugs says
We are all about having a good time!
Zenaida Arroyo says
I was about to ask the same question Erica did. Haha, that is a great story!
runswithpugs says
It was too fun!
