Welcome to the last week of April, where the rubber meets the road meets my sanity! It’s going to be a crazy month end, as juggle a weekend of mulch volunteering, a 10K, AND A’s 16th birthday. Has my training prepared me for all the things? I guess there’s only one way to find out.
Sunday
- Cardio: 4.64 miles, walking
This week went so quickly, I barely have great photos! Seriously! We kicked things off with a walk (of course), and then it was home to catch up on work and try to get ahead on things. I mentioned on IG that I am struggling with functional freeze… I get so overwhelmed with the tasks that I have to complete that I shut down a bit. Or, I go ahead and do all the tasks that don’t have as immediate of a deadline. My future self is thrilled for that, but the self on deadline isn’t a fan.
Monday
- Cardio: 5.51 miles, running
- Strength: Arms + Abs, 50 minutes
This ended up being a fairly nice run. I’m always grateful when that happens.
The follow up gym session wasn’t terrible either. I’m almost to 100 workouts in the gym, so that’s pretty epic.
Tuesday
- Cardio: 5.11 miles, walking + running
- Strength: Legs + Abs, 50 minutes
Lots to do so I had to get after it. J had another (awesome) engagement so I was on my own. I gutted through it, and went to the gym after.
Work was kicking my butt this week. I feel like I spent a lot of Tuesday prioritizing what I need to get done. In the evening, we attended an Eagle Court of Honor. I am so ready for A to complete his project… we should see it done in the next few months.
Wednesday
- Cardio: 4.05 miles, walking
- Strength: Arms + Abs, 50 minutes
I think I’ve just given up Wednesdays to walks right now. It’s ok.
I had a nail appointment (we went super neutral this time), and then just some scrambling to pick up the kids from school. Mr PugRunner wasn’t feeling his best this week, so I’m picking up the slack. It’s ok, but I’ll be ready for him to rejoin the team.
That evening, I went to a new book club. We read How to Kill Men and Get Away With It by Katy Brent. It was light and silly, but I loved the group. We met at an awesome Mexican restaurant, and even though I didn’t know anyone but the woman who invited me, I felt like I fit in.
Thursday
- Cardio: 3 miles, running + 3.13 miles, walking
- Strength: Legs + Abs, 50 minutes
Another solo day, so I kept it short, due to my upcoming 10K on Saturday.
I had to run errands and get through a bunch of writing for a deadline. Then I circled back to pick up A and his girlfriend. They were going out to dinner and then going on a date to their school’s musical. They had the best time and I loved that for them.
Friday
- Cardio: 5 miles, walking
I was finally able to meet up with J this week and we had a really nice walk. Usually, we run on Fridays, but I wanted to take a rest day.
Then it was just a busy day. My standing Friday call went long, and needed up being pretty hectic. Yuck. then I had a board to make and deliver, which took a while, and then I grabbed the kids from school. From there, we headed to Day 1 of our mulch fundraiser weekend. This weekend is always rough, as we deliver and spread hundreds of bags of mulch for Scouts. I didn’t get to bed til late.
Saturday
- Cardio: Spud Run 10K
It was an early, early morning. The Spud Run 10K was scheduled to start at 7AM, and I needed to get to the venue (30 minutes away), find my parking, and get my packet. I didn’t even have a flat runner to commemorate the event.
Long story short, it was a good event. And of course, I got my potatoes and cabbage, and a potato shaped medal! The bad news: it POURED. But more on that on Wednesday.
And then it was back to the mulching fun. We ended up being super efficient and finishing just about everything today. I love that we didn’t have to do more on Sunday.
Early to bed? Yes.
Thoughts + Goals
So where are we?
Running is going well. I have a 10 mile virtual run for Alter Ego coming up in a few weeks. I will also be running the Memorial Day 5K at the end of the month.
In the meantime, A turns 16 on Monday, which is just insane. He has less than 20 days of school in his sophomore year.
Over the next few weeks, we will continue to just do our thing. We have A’s birthday, May the Fourth, Derby Day, my birthday, and Mother’s Day. We also have the band banquet and a bunch of events, including a media boat tour, a Vegas night, the St. Augustine Food & Wine Festival, and the AE virtual run meet up. Not in any particular order.
How was your week in training? Are you busy with anything particular this time of year? Anyone ever get vegetables as part of their race swag?

Ahhh… the potato run! I just love the ‘swag’ at that one! Congrats!
I tend to get overwhelmed pretty easily too. When I have a lot of tasks in front of me, I just take them bit by bit. It does feel good to cross them off the list, doesn’t it?
runswithpugs says
I definitely have a to do list and I work through all the things and I love crossing them off. But sometimes, it doesn’t work and I just spin unproductively. I’m working on being better about it.
Deborah Brooks says
The potato and cabbage run is fun and different! I can’t imagine you not getting things done because you seem to have so many fun things going on every week. Your new book club sounds fun! I used to belong to one years ago maybe I need to again
runswithpugs says
I love book clubs. This one was a great fit, and I am excited about it! I was also super excited about the potatoes!
Coco says
OMG, happy birhtday to A! Wow!
So glad running is going well for you — wonder if those gym workouts are paying off? 😉
I am in a virtural book club, but haven’t done an IRL one since pre-covid. I’m always looking for ideas on the next book to read.
runswithpugs says
Maybe…. Today was Day 99…
Virtual book clubs just don’t hit the same for me. I hope you find a great next book!
Debbie says
Vegetables for race swag is quite unique! Glad you had a fun race despite the rain.
Happy birthday to A! He was Little Man when I first started reading your blog (and I think in kindergarten). Wow!
runswithpugs says
He was! And he was! Now he’s taller than me and I think if I called him Little Man he’d have some things to say about it!
Jenny says
Ha! I wish I would get potatoes as race swag. Rainy races can be fun (as long as it’s not freezing cold.)
This upcoming week is a busy one for us, but I still think you’re busier. At least I’m not spreading mulch!
Happy birthday to A! 16 is a big one!
runswithpugs says
It was not fun. It was soggy and sloppy and I hate wet shoes and socks. Boooo!
Melissa says
That spud run sounds too funny. Sorry about the rain! Potatoes and cabbage and a potato-shaped medal sounds awesome! Nice week!
runswithpugs says
Ugh. The rain was the worst. I hated every second of that.
Susanne says
How cool with a potato run and potato shaped medal! I’m glad running is going well for you!
I know all about functional freeze, if I have too much on my plate I tend to get almost paralyzed and don’t know where to start. Recently I’ve been better at it, and just start with something instead of spending time trying to figure out what I should start with.
I hope Mr Pugrunner feels better soon. And happy birthday to A!
runswithpugs says
If I can just find my strategy and plan of attack, I’m ok. And honestly, I’m a happy camper because I spent so much time working on my further out deadlines that this week is pretty easy for me.
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
May is always so crazy busy for school kids and families! Do the parents have to spread the mulch too? if so, that is exhausting work!! I hope A has an amazing birthday. That’s a big one!
runswithpugs says
We don’t HAVE to, but it helps. The kids work super hard, though, and I’m so proud of them.
It is a big birthday. I can’t believe it!
Darlene S. Cardillo says
Yes you are busy. Glad the race went well. Nope on getting vegetables at a race.
My life is busy too. Work is crazy. I’m off to Florida and I have another half and training has been lacking.
runswithpugs says
Hope you have a fun trip and the weather behaves!
Kimberly Hatting says
Potatoes are my fav veggie, so I’d be all about that swag! You certainly keep busy! I’m finally in recovery mode (figuratively) from all the packing/moving/unpacking I dealt with in recent months. Training for my next 13.1 (June 1st) seems like a cake walk, LOL.
runswithpugs says
You’re so ready for it!
Liz Dexter says
There’s a local run where you get cherry tomatoes and I did a horrific trail run once and got some really nice eggs – husband suggested I did it again to get more eggs, I politely suggested he got someone to take him to the farm where he could buy the eggs! You have all the things to do coming up, so good luck with that!
runswithpugs says
HAHAHAHA! I would totally run for eggs! But I would also go to the farm! That’s fabulous!
Stacie E Seidman says
Phew! BUSY! Nice work getting all the workouts in despite all of the life going on! Happy Birthday to A!!!
Jessie says
Love the potato run! So unique. You are a busy lady, but somehow it seems like you get it all done!
runswithpugs says
I really do try.
