May is here, and when people refer to it as “mayhem”, they aren’t kidding. Sheesh. April into May has been an absolute whirlwind, but onward we must go!
Sunday
- Cardio: 3.58 miles, walking
I did sleep in a little, but we had to get moving. It was the day we were celebrating A’s birthday, since the actual event fell on Monday. Of course, I had to get some miles.
And then we took him and his girlfriend to the outdoor mall for the day, so they could hang out. They made Lego Minifigs, and had Auntie Anne’s, and just had a blast. We also hung out to have our own day with tacos and shopping, and bumped into them a few times, but we all had our own fun day.
We met my parents for hibachi for dinner, which was fun. We don’t often get to enjoy that dining experience. And we finished the night with Dreamette ice cream. One of my favorites.
Monday
- Cardio: 4.52 miles, running + walking
- Strength: Arms + Abs, 50 minutes
Since I had a longer race on Saturday, I took it a little easier on Monday. It was the right decision.
The gym went well, too.
That being said, our morning started super early: A turned 16 and his girlfriend came to the house before he woke up to decorate and surprise him. They had breakfast together, and it was super cute.
That evening, we made dinner and had ice cream cake. It was low-key, just like he prefers. And I can’t believe I have a 16 year old!
Tuesday
- Cardio: 5.51 miles, running + walking
- Strength: Legs + Abs, 50 minutes’
It was good to get back out with J. And we had a really great Couch To 5K session with two 10 minute runs! I’m so proud of her. It’s getting a little more difficult with the warmer, more humid weather, but such is summer in Florida.
It’s also important to note that today marked 100 workouts at the Y. I’m super proud that I’ve stuck with it, and I am seeing improvements in my strength and fitness.
I had a lot to finish during the day, and a big meeting later at night. Evening meetings really wreck me, but I have so many coming up. Sigh.
Wednesday
- Cardio: 6.28 miles, running + walking
- Strength: Arms + Abs, 50 minutes
I started with a run, and ended with a walk. It just wasn’t working for me. These things happen.
That being said, it’s getting really warm here, and runs are getting harder. It’s just how it goes.
Thursday
- Cardio: 4.28 miles, running + walking
I was operating on a tight schedule on Thursday. I got in my run and walk, but never quite made it to the gym. There was a lot I had to do for work, and the repairperson came to fix our washing machine (somehow, the seal broke and needed to be replaced).
Friday
- Cardio: 6.93, miles + walking
TGIF! J and I ended our week with a great running session!
I spent most of Friday working, so I could have the weekend free. Yay. Mr PugRunner went to see Civil War (which he said I should absolutely NOT see), and we had a quiet night at home. I was good with that.
Saturday
- Cardio: 4.18 miles, walking
May The Fourth Be With You! I walked just over 4 miles in honor of Star Wars Day!
We watched my niece get married via Zoom (her wedding was a small affair on the Amalfi Coast in Italy), and it was lovely. Congratulations to them!
Then we pivoted to a Kentucky Derby party! So fun! I really want to go to the Derby. I told Mr PugRunner that’s the trip I want for my 50th birthday in a few year.
Thoughts + Goals
And here goes another month.
My birthday is this week, which may or may not be exciting. I have a few fun things planned for myself, so that’s all good. And then we are just rolling to the end of the school year and the start of summer. It’s all good.
I feel good, too, and that’s what’s important.
How was your week in training? Do you watch the Derby? Celebrate Star Wars Day? What’s coming up this month?

Happy Birthday to your son! Will he get his driver’s license soon? So exciting for him, bittersweet for you.
Congrats on 100 gym workouts! And Happy Birthday to you too!
runswithpugs says
He will. I was a mean mom and wouldn’t let him skip school to go to the DMV for his permit last year. There are just too many exams and things at the end of April/early May and it’s hard to get caught up. Since he got his permit in early June, I think that’s when we will go in. He is taking a safe teen defensive driving class with the sheriff and then I think we will make the appointment for him. He’s a good driver, and he’s just about ready. I’m just terrified of how everyone else drives. On Friday, we found out that he was selected to purchase a parking pass next year, so we did buy that.
Long story sort of short – we don’t have enough parking spots, so seniors get priority, followed by junior dual enrollment students (who have college courses and have to drive there), academy students (who aren’t zoned for our school and have to provide their own transportation), students with extracurriculars, and then based on grades and attendance. He won’t get a car because we both work from home and have two cars in the driveway, but at least he will be able to drive himself most of the time.

I am hoping it will be a fun one!

Happy birthday to your son!! I love ice cream cake – it’s my go-to birthday request. A trip to the Derby would be a fun time!
Mayhem has began here too. Wake me up when it’s June!
runswithpugs says
I *think* June will be better. I think.
I love ice cream in general. For my birthday, I would rather have a hot fudge sundae than anything else.
Debbie says
It sounds like A had a great birthday with many celebrations! Happy early birthday to you and congrats on 100 gym visits.
No Mayhem here since we’re empty nesters.
runswithpugs says
I think even when my nest is empty, I’m still going to be chaos. I don’t know another way lol!
Coco says
Happy birthday to A and happy almost birthday to you — I hope you feel celebrated, loved, and appreciated!
Even I’d say the washer repair is more important than getting to the gym. You have to be able to wash your workout clothes!
runswithpugs says
Thank you!
It was working, but somehow, a chunk ripped out of the seal, so water was shooting out when the wash ran. We could put towels and a bowl underneath and catch the leak, so we could do laundry, but it was good to have it done, too.
Jenny says
A’s girlfriend sounds amazing!!! She came to the house early to decorate on his birthday- how cool is that. I’ll bet they’ll be happy when he gets his license!
Yes, it’s been crazy around here. Luckily my work doesn’t get any busier this time of year (I’m always working the same hours) but my daughter’s stuff is crazy. It will mostly be over after next week though.
Nice job on keeping up with the fitness with everything else going on!
runswithpugs says
She’s so sweet. She is a little older and she needs to get her license too!
Liz Dexter says
Happy upcoming birthday and happy birthday to your lad! I do not know how you cope with the heat – I crumbled today when normal May temps suddenly returned to the UK after a cold spring, sadly the very weekend that we had a half-marathon to run!
runswithpugs says
Thank you!
And we don’t have a choice unless we stay inside. Lots of light dresses and flip flops is all I can think to do.
Kimberly Hatting says
100 gym workouts is an awesome milestone! Congrats!! I think the Derby would be a fun event to hit-up sometime. There are so many parties around here. There’s even a casino/race track five minutes from my place that had a bash this weekend.
runswithpugs says
I really want to go! It’s everything I love: Fun outfits, cool photo opps, fun food and drink, and horses!
Jessie says
Congrats Jenn on 100 gym workouts! That’s an accomplishent.
Happy birthday to your son!
You always host such great themed parties!
runswithpugs says
Thank you!
This party wasn’t quite the level I wanted to have, but it was fun. Next year will be better.
Stacie Seidman says
Happy Birthday to all of you guys! Can’t believe A is 16!
I almost got to go the Derby once when I was in college. My dad said we were going, and then I got uninvited because they had less tickets than they thought. Haha! Imagine that? Uninvited to the Derby. I need to remind him about that.
runswithpugs says
I would absolutely remind him of that! How devastating!
