Running your first race is always exciting and challenging, no matter if you are taking on a marathon or a 5K. With that in mind, the rules are the same, and I approach all distances in a similar fashion. Follow along to see if you agree with my advice!
Give Yourself Plenty Of Time
On race morning, I leave nothing to chance. I set several alarms, make sure all my race day gear is packed in advance, and give myself extra time for traffic, parking, or other delays. Yes, I have a reputation for being one of the first to arrive, and people who ride with me know that we are hitting the road early. It’s a small inconvenience to ensure the rest of the event runs smoothly. Pun intended.
Nothing New On Race Day
Bring the same energy you used in training to the starting line of your first race. That means familiar clothing, tried and true shoes, tested food, and established routine. Nothing will throw you quite so much as a new sports bra that starts chafing, or socks that begin sliding down while you’re running. Trust me on this. You’ll have plenty of time to switch up your routines if they turn out to need some review after the fact.
Buy The Finish Line Photo
If your race offers a photography service, strongly consider buying the finish line photo (and more). Race photographers do an amazing job and it’s really cool to get the fun shots with the finish line signage. Depending on the event and the location, you might also get photos of you in front of fabulous landmarks or views, so I would purchase those as well. (Disclaimer: running photos make you look like an absolutely rockstar or like absolute awfulness. There is no in between. Obviously, don’t buy the ones that don’t make you feel good about yourself. But if you see one that helps you relive the moment, don’t hesitate to snap it up).
Stick Around To Support Other Runners
The finish line of any race is an incredible experience as a runner and as a spectator. If you have the time, I advise to stick around for a bit to cheer on some of the finishers. They will appreciate the support, and you will feel great about seeing these awesome strangers conquering their goals!
Have Fun
Seriously. Unless you are vying for a top spot with prize money or a certain time to qualify for another race, just have fun with the day. This is especially true at your very first race (or first time at a certain distance). You’ll never have that “first” experience again, and I always advise to soak it in as much as you can. These are incredible memories that will be with you a lifetime, and you should enjoy them every step of the way!

It’s been awhile but I remember that your first race is so important. And you often make mistakes. If it is a big one such as a marathon or half, I’d buy the photo. Otherwise nope. We don’t have medals or pics for shirt or small races.

I do wish all photos were free at races. They’re so darn expensive! A friend took pictures of me running when I ran my first marathon.
