Yes, that’s right! May is over! What? How did that happen? This was a long month (for me), but it’s done and we are moving quickly into summer. Of course, we can’t go forward without our runfessions!
For this month’s trip to the runfessional, let’s join up with Marcia’s Healthy Slice…
I would like to start by runfessing…
That the end of the school year was not a happy one. There was too much drama and nonsense for my liking, and it really cast a shadow on what should have been a celebratory time. It’s done and over with, but not my favorite way to close a chapter.
Next, I’ll runfess…
That the heat and humidity has been OPPRESSIVE. Yes, the caps are necessary. My motivation is in the toilet because it is just so hard to get out there and run and breathe. Even if I do manage to make it out before the sun comes up, the air is still so very thick. I know it’s like this every summer, but every summer I’m going to be bummed about it.
My third runfession is…
Hurricane season starts on June 1. It’s a long season, and all the reports predict a pretty active time. Swell. Of course, weather is weather, and impossible to really nail down, but I think I’ll be taking a few extra precautions this year, just in case. Here’s hoping that everyone stays safe and training isn’t too derailed by any potential storm systems.
Next, I would runfess…
That I am thinking about skipping a July 4 race this year. Usually, I am all about the holiday run, but it’s just so hot and 4th of July is always brutal. I have another race in July to make up for it, but it’s always strange to interrupt traditions. August will be rough, too…
My Final Runfession…
Is that I feel super mentally checked out and ready for vacation. The good news is that we have a lot of fun things and trips coming up over the summer. The bad news is that I don’t want to wait one second longer for any of them. Sigh. But patience is a virtue, so I will hold steady as we wait.
Do you have anything to runfess this month?

Ugh, sorry to hear about the drama. That’s never necessary and always stressful.
We have a vacation right after July 4, so July 4 will be what it is. Probably a bike ride and some watermelon.
runswithpugs says
It’s so upsetting, especially as a bystander. But onward and upward!
I hope you have a wonderful vacation!
Jenny says
Okay, I have one word to say about the weather- ARRRRRRG! I actually think the humidity is worse before the sun comes up- so you’re either baking in the sun or swimming through the humidity. And, we skipped our July 4th race last year, for the same reason. It’s just SO hot. If the race started at 6 am, then maybe, but it always starts too late. Not sure yet what we’re going to do this year.
Sorry about the drama! I kind of feel like that described our whole year, but then the end was pretty calm.
runswithpugs says
If I can get out of the house by 5:30 I’m ok. J and I usually meet at 7, and she wants to run more but she also has asthma. I suggested we head out at 6:30 if she wants to try, and she will give it a go.
Why won’t races start at 6! That would be perfect.
Kids can be so awesome, but then also so awful. I hope that we are done with the shenanigans and can get back to the awesome part.
Deborah Brooks says
I am with you on the summer heat and humidity just sucking the soul out of running. I know it is much worse for you Florida peeps. Do you ever get used to it? Glad you have some fun summer trips planned! I love summer travel
runswithpugs says
I don’t think we get use to it, but we do get resigned to our fate. There’s just no escaping it unless you hit the treadmill so you have to embrace the suck and hope for better days.
Kimberly Hatting says
Bummer on the end-of-year drama.
I have a 4th of July race I’ve done almost every year for a long time… but I’ve spotted a couple of potential new-to-me races in my new area. I feel disloyal, but I’m also eager to do some new events …
runswithpugs says
Oh, I would totally check out the events in your new area! How fun!
Darlene S Cardillo says
I know I could never do anything in the summer in Florida except sit on the beach.
So you need to give yourself some slack. Indoor gym for workouts until fall.
Vacations are exciting… where?
runswithpugs says
Even the beach is too hot right now!
We have some trips to Orlando, and then one to Tennessee! I’m excited!
Marcia says
I’m so sorry to hear that school ended on a sour note. All the more reason to embrace summer vacay, am I right? I can just imagine how oppressive that summer heat is. I recall trying to run there in the heat and it is no joke!
runswithpugs says
It’s really not fun. I know it gets hot everywhere but this just drains the soul from my body.
Michelle says
Sorry about the drama – never a fun way to end the school year. And I don’t blame you on the idea of skipping your 4th of July race — I gave up the local race here a few years ago because it was such a slog in stiffling heat…sorta takes the fun out of it, right?
Here’s to a quieter and more relaxing June!
runswithpugs says
It really does. But it’s also so fun and themed! I’ll have to see!
