Ok! So MY boy is back in town, and The Boys season 4 is streaming again, but that totally counts, right? A was at band camp at UNF this past week, and we certainly missed the heck out of him. But we had a busy week, ourselves. Let’s dive in.
Sunday
- Cardio: 4.03 miles, walking
Happy Sunday and Happy Father’s Day! Of course, the day started with some miles!
And then we got moving. We had reservations at the Cheesecake Factory for brunch (Did you know you can make reservations for parties up to 6 when you join their rewards program? Score!). And then it was off to the University of North Florida to drop A off at band camp.
We moved him into his dorm, and then joined him as he went to do his auditions and placement tests. Finally, we attended our parent meeting before saying our goodbyes. He would spend the week there, with a fairly intensive course load. His focus was clarinet, but he also brought his alto sax, and had the opportunity to play tenor sax while there. We would pick him up on Friday afternoon after his concerts.
Monday
- Cardio: 7.8 miles, running + walking
As I’ve said, the weather is rough. I started out running, but walked when it felt right, because it’s just so miserable.
After I got cleaned up, it was finally time to rehydrate my sourdough starter. I was nervous as all get out, but I gathered my supplies and got to work. We will see how it goes.
Tuesday
- Cardio: 6.67 miles, running + walking
- Strength: Arms + Abs, 50 minutes
I met up with J for our morning miles. Our only goal is forward, no matter how that looks.
And I was super happy to get to the gym for an upper body workout. It was rough, but I loved it. It’s funny how arms are now slightly more appealing than legs these days.
In the evening, I went to the one year anniversary of Le Petit Paris in Southside. It was a beautiful event, with a build-your-own-bouquet table, wine tastings, coffee, and violin music. We got to sample French pastries, as well as soups, salads, quiche, and sandwiches from their menu. Yes, it was a late night, but I enjoyed it immensely.
Wednesday
- Cardio: 5.48 miles, walking
- Strength: Legs + Abs, 50 minutes
Ideally, I would have enjoyed going to the beach, but the rain has not been my friend. Instead, I got a little wet on my miles. Boo.
Let’s check in on that sourdough, shall we? She’s growing and bubbling. I ended up having to move her to a bigger jar. Yikes.
We kept an eye on the weather throughout the day, but I had an appointment for a session with a new photographer friend. I couldn’t turn that down! Huge thanks to Brittanie Wilkerson for the fun and the photos! It was incredibly windy (which is why I had to put my hair up last minute), but we had a blast anyway.
Thursday
- Cardio: 5.81 miles, running + walking
Friends, I was SORE after yesterday’s leg workout, but we got it done. I was super grateful for the sunrise, though.
Mr PugRunner and I had brunch plans at the new Tulua Bistro. I was in it for the Rainbow Gummy Bear martini. This place has brunch every day and it’s just such a great vibe. My breakfast was awesome, too.
Friday
- Cardio: 6.39 miles, walking
I didn’t sleep well the night before due to some nasty allergies, and the rain was back. J and I agreed to just walk it out. No point in being even more unhappy trying to run in those conditions.
I was excited to get home and cleaned up. We picked up A’s girlfriend and then headed to UNF to see him. He performed as part of a jazz band with a solo on the tenor sax, and then in the higher level of the two symphonic bands on clarinet. His improv skills have improved markedly, and of course, we were so proud of him.
Saturday
- Cardio: 4.82 miles, walking
Slept in a little and then hit the road. Today marks Day 22 of the Streaking With The COOL KIDS challenge, and we are almost done with the requisite 30 days.
We went to an “herb farm” this morning: we are working on our backyard garden, and needed some plants, and then we ordered a new raised garden bed, and some other things.
Today will be my last feed of the sourdough before I start baking. She’s ready. I think I will try to make a loaf of bread and a batch of sourdough brownies.
Thoughts + Goals
We are just cruising through June.
My Streaking Challenge is going well. There are a few things I’d love to get done in the next few weeks of summer, so I am hopeful to be able to make everything work.
It will be nice to have some veggies out back. Mr PugRunner has been making things happen with some arugula and basil but I want him to have a nicer set up than just random pots. I think he will love his new raised garden bed and he can start really figuring out his growing.
This week, I have book club, the opening of a new run store in our area, and A is finally testing for his license! Eek!
How was your week in training? Any sourdough discard recipes you can recommend?

We had some Florida style heat and humidity this week and y’all can have it back, mmmkay? Lol It was rough. Glad to see you just doing what you can to move forward.
We grow a lot of herbs and lettuce too! My mom gave me an aerogarden for my birthday last year and I start the herbs there. It’s been really rewarding!
You must be so proud of your son! Great job to him!
runswithpugs says
That’s so cool. We hit up the herb farm by our house and got some recommendations. I am going to put together a pollinator garden to help with the whole situation.
I am so proud of him. He’s really amazing.
Deborah Brooks says
Glad your streak is going well! I am afraid to make my own sourdough as well but it is my favorite. So not a gardener over here sadly. Congrats to your son and glad to read he had this opportunity
runswithpugs says
I was terrified to make anything, and honestly, I never really LOVED sourdough, but these crackers… OMG. And the loaf I made isn’t even super sour. I added honey to the dough and it’s just like a nice crusty bread, with just a hint of the sourdough flavor. Five stars.
Coco says
You had me at sourdough brownies — I hope they taste as good as they sound!
What a great experience for your son — he’s quite talented!
runswithpugs says
What’s the worst that can happen? Chocolate is never bad, right?
I’m biased, but I think he is incredibly talented. He could definitely take everything more seriously (which he saw when he showed up at camp), but he just gets in there and does his thing. The fact that he would pick up a mostly new to him instrument and stand up and play a (gorgeous) improv solo in front of a decent crowd will never cease to impress me. I would rather the earth swallow me whole.

Ooh, A went to band camp at UNF! How did he like it? My daughter did the band camp at FSU last year and I wanted her to try a different one this summer (to get a look at some different Florida campuses) but she didn’t want to go (sigh.)
We actually had the best week, weather-wise, that you could hope for in Florida in June- hot (duh) but breezy (yay!) and not too rainy. It was great because we had visitors. I’m sure we’ll pay the price this week though- it’s already steamy and muggy outside.
Nice job on your streak! And, getting yourself to the gym.
runswithpugs says
He did like it a lot. The director is leaving so he’s not sure if it’s going to continue next year, but A learned A LOT. I would like him to go to FSU next summer, but we will see. He really wishes UCF had a summer program, but he will just have to make do with what is out there.

We had some serious heat too this week! When I got our for a run at 6 am this morning it was already in the 80s, which I’m not used to. Love the idea of a raised garden bed – sounds like fun!
runswithpugs says
I am a terrible gardener, but we got some tips, and found some “native” veggies and we are going to give it a go again.
Debbie says
It sounds like you made the most of your time while A was away at camp. It sounds like it was a great experience for him.
It’s been hot (for us) this week, but I think it’s supposed to be a little more tolerable this coming week.
I haven’t worked with a sourdough starter in over 40 years and at the time I only made bread. It will be fun seeing all of the things you come up with.
runswithpugs says
I’m not coming up with anything lol! I’m using the internet and tik tok to show me the way! There is a pull apart bread I’m eyeing that looks fantastic!
Darlene Cardillo says
We had your weather as others have mentioned. Boy is it hard to run.
I’ve never attempted sour dough. Good luck.
Congrats on your streak.
runswithpugs says
It’s working out well! I baked my first loaf today and it came out beautifully!
Kimberly Hatting says
I’ve never worked with sourdough from scratch. Years ago, a bunch of us kept passing “starters” around our playgroup, and I had multiple frozen breads on hand come Christmas time.
runswithpugs says
I got a dehydrated starter and brought that back to life. I was not prepared to make my own. But now, of course, I feel like I could. It’s a fun little experiment.
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
What a great experience for your son at band camp! I bet you did miss him though.
Hmmm, sourdough brownies? I’ve never heard of that one. I hope your recipes turned out.
And good luck to your son on his drivers test. That can be stressful!
runswithpugs says
Of course I missed him! It was lonely without him around!
From what I’m reading, a little sourdough starter helps with depth of flavor in a lot of recipes. I love chocolate and I love brownies, so I”m willing to give it a go.
I will NOT be at the test. It’s way too stressful LOL! Mr PugRunner is going to take him.
Jessie says
Kudos on moving forward in that heat! Yikes. Impressive.
I never did get our starter to work during covid…I wish I did as I love sourdough bread!
Lots of fun meals this week. Love your photos too!
runswithpugs says
I bought a dehydrated starter because I was too scared to try my own. So far, so good. I baked my first loaf today and it came out so great!
Marcia says
I so feel you on just doing what you can to keep moving in the heat. That pretty much sums up my week here. Sounds like A had a great experience at Band Camp! Congrats to him. Did someone say sourdough brownies???
runswithpugs says
I did say that! I am literally pulling my first boule out of the oven and I made sourdough discard crackers. Let me see how the actual bread turned out and then I will be more adventurous.
