Some things are easy to love, but running is something I’ve learned to love. It’s a tough sport, unforgiving at times, and there are aspects of it that need to grow on a person. On Valentine’s Day, I want to acknowledge the things I’ve learned to love about running, even though it took me some time.

Sweating
I hate being hot. It’s the absolute worst, and when you live in Florida, it can be pretty intense. However, perspiration is the sign of a run well done. And sweating helps flush out toxins, so that’s a plus. It’s not pretty, but I’ve learned to love (or, at least appreciate) sweating.

Socks
Yes, this is a weird one, but I really had to learn to love socks. I am barefoot as much as humanly possible, and I only wear socks with my running shoes. Constriction on and around my toes makes me feel incredibly claustrophobic so I do try to avoid it when I can. That being said, I did settle on socks that I really do love (for running, walking, and hiking) and I am happy to stock up and wear my Jogologies.

Waking Up Early
Once upon a time, I could stay in bed til 11AM or even 1PM without batting an eye. Motherhood changed that for me with an early riser, but running made it even worse. It can absolutely be difficult to drag myself out of bed before the sun comes up, but getting a jump on my day, and seeing the sunrise makes it all worth it. Usually.

Waiting To Drink My Coffee
In a perfect world, I could have my iced coffee right when I get out of bed, but with running, that’s just not possible. If I drink my favorite source of caffeine before I go bouncing along the payment, the retribution of my GI system is swift and merciless. I’ve learned to love the idea of treating myself to my iced coffee upon my return. It’s a nice way to cool down after a good run.

Being Vulnerable
Running is a humbling sport, and while it leads to amazing feelings, it can also leave me feeling very vulnerable. As a GenXer, vulnerability is a most unpleasant thing. I loathe admitting that I feel less than, hurt, or inadequate in any way, but running has taught me to dig deep and lean into the hard.
