After the longest May to ever May, June is here and we are ready to take on the first full month of summer! There is a certain freedom associated with summer vacation, and I like the idea of a little less pressure. Although, who am I kidding? I always seem to find pressure.
Sunday
- Cardio: 4.24 miles, walking
Starting the week off strong with a nice walk. This was one of the hottest weekends in memory, and that sun was really baking.
Of course, this meant that I was fleeing for the air conditioning for the rest of the day. I worked on my 1000 piece puzzle and chilled out for the rest of the day, stopping only to set out my flat runner for tomorrow’s race. Surprise appearance by the pugs.
Monday
- Cardio: Florida Striders Memorial Day 5K
I picked up J early to get to to our race. You can read all about it here. It was a hot morning, but we had a great time, and that’s really all I can ask for.
After breakfast, we had literally zero plans, so we just hung at home again. It was too hot to go anywhere, even the pool or the beach. I was fine with that.
Tuesday
- Cardio: 5.52 miles, walking
- Strength: Arms + Abs, 60 minutes
Since we ran on Monday and it was still hot, we opted for a nice Tuesday morning walk. I do love that sunrise.
And, miracle or miracles! I made it back to the gym. It was super hard, but also felt super great. I missed the weights, but only just a little.
Meeting in the evening, but fortunately it didn’t go on too long.
Wednesday
- Cardio: 6.64 miles, walking
Big day! It was still fairly hot so I did a 4+ mile walk in the morning.
And then we picked up A’s girlfriend and we made the trek to the University of Central Florida for a campus tour! I don’t have one photo, but we all absolutely loved the school and the vibe. Not sure what I was expecting (or not expecting), but we felt so welcomed and at home. So I guess that’s on the list.
Thursday
- Cardio: 4.43 miles, running + 2.19 miles, walking
- Strength: Legs + Abs, 60 minutes
Road trips certainly have a way of taking a lot out of you, so it was struggle getting out of bed on Thursday morning. But off I went.
I spent the day doing laundry and playing catch up, and then we headed over to J’s house to celebrate her hubby’s birthday. It was a lovely night of friendship, with a fabulous dinner!
Friday
- Cardio: 3.69 miles, running + 2.73 miles, walking
I’m not saying the wine and late bedtime was a negative factor in Friday’s run, but… I’m not NOT saying that either.
We agreed that we are going to have to start going out maybe 30 minutes earlier if we want to add more distance. Once the sun gets overhead, it’s just too hard.
A went to his girlfriend’s house, so we had a day taco date. Yum.
Saturday
- Cardio: 5.02 miles, walking
Happy June 1! Today starts the 2024 #StreakingWithTheCOOLKIDS 30 day running streak! That means 30 days of running/walking/jogging one continuous, dedicated, intentional mile every day. I’m so ready.
The rest of the day was also pretty calm. I’m hoping to watch a movie tonight, but not sure how that’s going to go.
Thoughts + Goals
Well, it’s (Florida) summer, so you know that comes with its own challenges. We’re talking hurricane season, heat, bugs, humidity, you name it.
I plan to cruise through the month. There is one “race” on the calendar, the CommUnity Rainbow Run 4.9K, in honor of the 8th anniversary of the Pulse tragedy, and the 49 angels, their families, the survivors, first responders and all those impacted.
From there, I’m hoping to enjoy some more time in the gym, working on building strength. Obviously, it’s not the most fun, but since we aren’t running as many miles in the heat, we have to do something to keep us going.
How was your week in training? How are you beating the heat? Any plans for Global Running Day this week?

It was a long month, wasn’t it? It wasn’t necessarily bad, just long, lol. I’m with you on the plan to just cruise through June. I have a trail 10k in July, but I’m not worried about training for it. It’s going to be hot and hilly, so it’s all about enjoying the ride.
Do you have any other college visits planned for the summer? Those were always so much fun!
runswithpugs says
We are going to try to schedule something for UF and then definitely UNF. A doesn’t really want to go more than 2-3 hours away, so we are kind of limited on choices.
Coco says
Ah, you’ve entered the era of A spending time at his GF’s house — how sweet!
I think the summer is a good time to spend time in an air-conditioned gym!
That 4.9K sounds like a great event. How far are you from Orlando?
runswithpugs says
They have been spending almost every day here! Not going to lie, I love it a lot. But she was moving (nearby) and they needed help, so he was tapped in.
I will be in the gym but I hate the treadmill, so outside I go.
Depending on the part of Orlando I am going to, it’s anywhere from 1.5-2 hours. Not bad at all.

Cruising through June over here too before a busier July. I am going to have to start getting out earlier as well which I am not thrilled about either. I’ve noticed wine does mess up my sleep now-ugh. Have a great week
runswithpugs says
I haven’t been drinking much wine lately. Just occasionally, when we have an event. I used to be a glass a night, then every other night. Hope you have a great week as well!
Melissa says
We had a busy May but with school done, I’m hoping things calm down a bit. Nice week of activities even with the heat!
runswithpugs says
All I can do is try to keep going!

Ooh, UCF? I’ve never been to that campus. I’ve been to UF and FSU- both beautiful campuses. How exciting that it’s time to start thinking about college!
Heat, humidity, hurricanes ,bugs… yep, that’s our summer! Luckily it’s short- JUST KIDDING!!!!! We’ll have five months of this. I’m definitely going to focus on strength and speed for a little (both of which can be achieved in an air conditioned gym) but there will be outside runs too, of course. SIGH!
runswithpugs says
HAHAHAHAH! Short, indeed!
Definitely check it out. I was really impressed, and the kids absolutely loved it. She also wants to see UF, and they had a tour of FSU last year with band, but didn’t really love it.
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
That’s great that you liked the campus tour! I think my kids both ended up at a place that fits them even though the universities are totally different. It’s hard to believe I have two college kids now!
We had an oddly chilly week around here, which was good because our pool equipment was broken for a bit. It’s up and running now, so bring on the summer heat!
runswithpugs says
I am so jealous of your weather! It’s just so hot. I wasn’t really sure what I was expecting him to like. UCF is a huge school, and I figured that he would want something smaller since he wants to stay close to home, but I guess if it fits, it fits!
Kimberly Hatting says
We had our first taste of humidity this weekend (race weekend, wouldn’t you know?). It wasn’t terrible because the temps weren’t too hot (yet), but that first blast does feel a little heavy. All the campus visits are fun! That’s such an exciting time 😉
Jessie says
so hot already, wow! I can imagine it can be a bit draining of the energy, but you are still getting out there. Well done!
I’m excited for June! It’s a wonderful month…
Darlene S Cardillo says
I’m jealous of your weather Nov-May. LOL
You just have to take it slower.
Congrats on yet another 5k.
I missed my last one… hope to run one finally in a few weeks.
Debbie says
Looks like you had a good week of workouts!
I thoroughly enjoyed last week’s weather, but I’m not so thrilled about the humidity returning (although, I doubt it’s as bad as you have it since it’s not as hot here). Oh well, it was nice while it lasted.
Cari says
Something to keep us going indeed. I LOLed at surprise pugpearance, as if they do’t supervise all the things 😀
runswithpugs says
They need their sweet little paws in everything!
