How to Stay Active on Vacation Without Ruining Your Trip

July 14, 2026      6 Comments

Travel changes your entire daily rhythm. The moment you pack your bags and leave your normal routine behind, your standard workout schedule usually goes right out the window. If you’re trying to keep your fitness momentum alive, or you just don’t want to feel completely sluggish by day three of a trip, finding a way to stay active on the road is essential.

The trap most people fall into is trying to duplicate their home routine while staying in a hotel. You promise yourself you’ll hit the limited hotel gym for an hour every morning, or you pack an entire suitcase of heavy gear you never end up touching. By day two, the guilt sets in, and the gear remains untouched.

Staying active while traveling does not have to be a burden. It just requires a shift in how you define a workout. Here is how to keep your momentum moving forward without sacrificing the actual joy of being on vacation.

Pack Realistically

Your workout gear takes up valuable suitcase real estate, so be strategic. You probably don’t need five different gym outfits and multiple pairs of shoes. Pack your absolute favorite, most comfortable pair of running or walking sneakers and two or three lightweight, quick-drying outfits that you can easily rinse out in the sink if needed. If your gear is easy to manage, you’re significantly more likely to actually use it. If it feels like a hassle, it stays buried under your pajamas.

Let Exploration Become Your Daily Mileage

The easiest way to get your steps in without forcing a structured workout is to simply explore your destination on foot. Skip the rideshare apps and the public transit whenever it is safe and practical to do so. Walk to the local coffee shop, wander through the historic districts, or take the long route back to your hotel after dinner. You’ll see things you would have missed entirely from the window of a car, and you’ll easily clear your movement goals without ever staring at a gym wall.

The Twenty Minute Rule Changes Everything

When you’re at home, a workout might require an hour or more to feel worthwhile. On vacation, throw that idea away. A twenty-minute window is more than enough time to get your blood moving and maintain your routine. Set a timer, run or walk out in one direction for ten minutes, and then turn around and head back. It’s short enough that it won’t disrupt your family plans, but it’s long enough to clear your head and give you that vital burst of energy for the day ahead.

Embrace The Hotel Amenities

If your hotel has a pool, use it for something other than lounging with a book. A quick twenty minutes of swimming laps or even just moving around in the water provides great, zero-impact cardio that keeps your joints happy after a long day of travel. If you prefer staying dry, check the front desk to see if they offer complimentary bicycles or maps of local running trails. Most properties want to help you explore, and they often have the best insider knowledge on well-lit, safe paths right outside their doors.

Keep The Pressure Off

Vacation miles aren’t the time to chase personal records or worry about your average pace. The weather will be different, the terrain will be unfamiliar, and your body might be tired from sleeping in a different bed. Let your vacation movement be entirely about how it makes you feel. Slow down, look around, take photos, and remember that simply showing up for yourself is the real victory here.

How do you stay active on your vacation and trips? Do any of these tips resonate?

That 20-minute idea is such a good one, Jenn! It doesn’t always have to be a BIG workout!
A 20-minute out-and-back run is a great way to explore a new place. You get a feel for the neighbourhood, you don’t have to worry about getting lost, and you’re back before everyone else is even ready for breakfast.

And it’s amazing how much walking is involved in touring a city! It’s easy to ramp up 30’000 steps in a day!

we are heading to NY next and I saw a TikTok where a group of women started at the top of Manhattan and walked allllllll the way to the bottom. With pictures and food stops. In one day. I shared it with my husband and the look of panic on his face. Because he knows I would absolutely do that in a heartbeat if we weren’t on a time schedule.

    Yes. All of them.

FYI love your Brooklyn Bridge Pic.

LOL. My friends did that NYC walk. Sounds like a great idea. My hubby would not agree. In fact, he hates to travel.

I try to fit in a race but that’s because that’s my reason and I’m solo.

Actually- that walk from the top of Manhattan to the bottom sounds SO FUN! I want to do that (referring to your response to Catrina above).
I usually enjoy running in a new place, and consider it part of the vacation. Even if I’m just running around the neighborhood of the airbnb, it’s still cool to see a new place. I like your 20 minute idea- you’ll almost always have a spare 20 minutes, and it really is so much better than doing nothing.
    Enjoy your trip!!!

It was a beautiful morning that turned quickly into a beautiful day. Sundays are hard because they are immediately followed by Mondays, and Mondays are hard.

Lots to catch up on this week! April is chock full of holidays, birthdays, days off, and events, so let’s get to it!

About this morning… I was up and out early to dri About this morning…

I was up and out early to drive to Flagler Beach for the #Missionpossible5k.

It was a small, well organized event, with an easy-to-follow course (the last mile was almost exclusively an ocean view), with great shirts and swag.

I was really pleased with my performance, and even more pleased with this beach sunrise. I’ll share more on the #RunnersRundown on Wednesday, so stay tuned!

Where did you run or race this weekend?

So good to stretch the legs today. I was super sore after a @runsmartofficial cross training session last night, and needed to just get out there and let the fresh air work its magic.

What are you up to today? I really need to take a moment with my calendar and get some plans locked into place.

I got to sleep in AND take advantage of some cooler temps. It really didn’t warm up until my last mile and that was just fine.

I feel like this month and next are really just flying by. So much is going on, and I want so badly to enjoy it all, including the crisp, sunny days where we find them!

Happy Monday! I don’t know about you all, but you Happy Monday!

I don’t know about you all, but your girl is TIRED. It is so hard to roll out of bed some mornings. Ugh.

I managed (finally) and banked six miles in some gross humidity. And now it’s time for some self care and then back to work.

Also. We have somehow acquired a pecan tree? Any tips on the growth and care of this would be greatly appreciated!

Sunday fun day! Just a short walk to start the da Sunday fun day!

Just a short walk to start the day and work out some stiffness. Some days, my ankle just doesn’t want to cooperate 🫤

I have been making graphics and content all day for a client, and now I’m about to do hair and makeup for a little event. Wheee!

This week is going to be BUSY! There’s a lot of changes to the regular routines (nails, a digital learning day, after school and weekend programming) and I have a race on Saturday and bocce ball on Sunday!

Who else is ready to dive in?!
